I was at best buy today, and played the game guitar hero for a while, and the bass player on the game had a bass that looked just like a stingray. I know gibson was the guitar sponser. I wonder if this is really supposed to be a ray?

I went to best buy today and it looked to me like an old Gibson Grabber bass. In the animation I can see that it would be very similar to a ray. I really think it is that Gibson bass though.

I own the first Guitar Hero, and I have a demo of the second one. It is definitely a Stingray, and not a Grabber.

Hey,

Don't they need a license or "permission" by BP to put a 'Ray in a video game?

...Or maybe not... I guess it could be considered as free advertisement.:)

IANAL, but I doubt it. If they used the "Ernie Ball" trademark then they would definitely need permission. I would think it falls under fair use with the only gotcha being that it's an animated representation of an Ernie Ball product and not a picture of an actual instrument so no business realtionship exists as would have occured if the instrument were sold to an individual and profits returned to the company. They're definitely using the likeness of an Ernie Ball product. Now that I think about it, they're essentially creating an Ernie Ball copy in "virtual world" and that could be considered a trademark infringement. But it would be bad press to go after the makers of Guitar Hero. Maybe they give credit to EB/MM in the credits.
