Hello,
As I understood the only way to have my AxisSS installed with a Music Man compensated nut is to send it to factory. Since I'm not willing to ship it from Europe to California for a nut replacement, any suggestions on using some other products on the market, any experiences ?
and btw. any suggestions/experiences on GraphTech saddles (non piezzo)...

Thanks a lot !

I have Graphtech graphite saddles fitted on my hard tail EVH.

They take away some of the high top end, and give the tone a slight plastic type feel to it. Hard to describe! In fact I was thinking of putting EBMM ones back on.

Mind you, it stops you breaking strings. The ones I have on there have done about 15 gigs and are rotten, yet refuse to break!

I have graphtech saddles on an old strat and have just fitted the new floyd ones to my Axis. I find them to be great sounding and the Graphtech claim of improved sustain seems to ring true for me (geddit...ring true! :D ).

I haven't noticed a loss of top end or plastic-like tone quality of which you describe Tim but that's not to say it's not true for your experiences.

The added string life is truely staggering, I get SO annoyed with string burrs that the added reliability and great tone mean they're a must for me.

here's part of dudley's reply om this subject......that indicates to me they are not currently setting up to do retrofits.......

(quote)

Soon ALL MM instruments will be shipping with compensated nuts, except fretless basses, which wouldn't really benefit from it as fretted instruments do. We have discussed offering an upgrade service for older instruments, but at this time we are not setup to do it efficiently enough. We'll keep you posted as that possibility progresses.

If one understands 'alter' to mean 'adjust', then I'd say this is the domain of baseball players and dancers who moonwalk. :D

Jimmy,

C'mon Jimmy, if you're a diver you had your nuts altered too many times thanks to the pressure and cold water effect, keep 'em well while on the dry ground though ......... :D

So you say that a standard Earvana nut fits just fine in a AxisSS ... I'm gonna place an order , is there anything I should know, any side effects besides cosmetics ?

Croatia is about 600km from my shop :D just come over and have a coffee ;)

No you should follow their instructions and you will be fine, there are some fine tunings to do but I ´ll help you then via mail.
If you are not familiar with filing nut slots and nut work leave it to a pro to install it.

Good luck

The installation of the Earvana compensated nut should not be carried out by anyone unless they know what they are doing.
I had mine installed by the guy who made my guitar for me.
The most difficult parts were the clean removal of the old nut (without cracking or splintering the surroundings) and then the filing of the nut itself to accept the guage strings that you use.

You need precise files to do this - yes I know somebody might say that they installed it and the only tools they needed was a stanley knife, an "Irish Screwdriver" and a modellers file, but sh*t, just pay a technician the going rate and any problems will be his responsibility.
It should take less than an hour to install.

PS
I can't say for sure that it would fit an Axis as I don't have an axis, but as I remember it, Earvana offer a relacement for Teles, Gibsons or they offer a blank nut that should be fit for your purpose.

I scanned the neck of my guitar and sent it to Earvana for their opinion.

Measure your actual nut (the one in the guitar:)), and check their homepage. Will work for Axis cause it works for my Silo (same scale), I don´t know where you can get one in Kroatia.
Remember if you don´t find one you can get one through me.
Good luck.
