I wanted to share my pain here...

...as soon as this happened but the forums were down, so I had to post this at TalkBass first (Figjam was one of the first friends who gave me his supporting words). From May 28, 2005 to January 28, 2006 (both Saturdays), exactly 35 weeks (245 days) after putting my hands on my Bongo for the first time, it has got the first "character marks". I was practicing and then put the bass (still plugged) on the stand. I started walking, pulled the cable with my foot and BANG! (One more reason for hating cables. They're #1 public enemy) Fortunately the body didn't suffer (apparently), but now I have these annoying chips in my preciated instrument's headstock. I know that I will accept it in the end, but I'm still so pissed .

I had the same problem with my Lava Pearl HH Bongo 4.

Soultion, to my benifit, my sister had one of those 4,693,002 peice Crayola marker sets. I found a color strikingly similar to Lava Pearl. "Colored" the area in question, and you could not see it from more than 5 feet away.

Cheezwiz got the Bongo when I was feeling whorish. It did such a good job, I doubt he even remembers it having the issue. Watcha say Patsy?

Bongo dents

I hate it when that happens, I was changing the battery in my smoke detector
yesterday, I lost my grip the battery and it fell right on top of the upper horn of my bongo HS that was sitting on a stand in that area. now I have a nice nik in mine. It sucks but life goes on.

Ouch! Yeah, the first couple of dings are probably the hardest to deal with. That said, I'm curious and maybe even a bit anxious to see what a mojo'd Bongo would look like.

I can't believe how long it lasted! The Bongo fivers are so long that my headstock presents a constant danger to overhead light fixtures, mic stands, miscellaneous humans and wildlife wandering through the back yard.

My LavaPearl came with a chip, down to the wood, at the point of the headstock. A bit of red "Sharpie" on the wood then a coat of "Bronze" cheapo nail polish ['Dollar Store" grade] and you'd be hard put to find the touch-up, even from a foot away.

Oh man, if only you could see my first guit. It has so many chips in the headstock. I dropped it at my first show ever, on concrete, and cracked the finish on the bottom edge. Repaired it with bondo and some car paint. The back is scratched to hell and back from my large cowboy style belt buckles. I got sick of the damn back plate getting in the way of changing strings so I removed it.

I was rocking out once, in my younger days, and in those days I kept the strings on the headstock long and untrimmed. That was until I stuck 2 of them into a badly placed hanging extension cord and as I hit the strings, sparks FLEW from the fretboard, flames RACED up the strings, burning off all crap from my fingers and then the strings began to glow red like a toaster. I still have a permenant burns on the fret board.


That guitar still plays like a son of a b*tch though.

I've given up on feeling bad about those chips and dings. My Bongo 5 which is about 8 months old now has a ding, scratch, or chip for just about every one of those months. I've even got some just like yours. I quit the life of being a polisher, now I'm a player! There's a good quote somewhere in that last line. Just needs a little work.

First one still always stings though.

You probably don't even need an electrical outlet for your amp anymore, do you? It sounds like you can just hold the cord and produce enough power!

Well my teeth are just as crooked and jack-o-lantern like as ever. I can produce some pics of the guitar this evening, though I did remove the blood splattered pick guard (seperate incident, I strummed a thumbnail right off in the middle of a set and just kept on playing, but I covered the guit with blood) and cleaned it up as best I could.


It's also not a MM, so I dunno if it should grace these forums.

The worst accident I had with a bass was with my Ric. At a gig, I didn't have a stand, so I leaned the bass against my amp. At some point I bumped it, and watched helplessly as it fell in slow motion. When it hit, 2 tuners flew about 20 feet!

Another time, after a gig, I leaned the Ric (in its case) against the trunk of my car. After a period of time I forgot it was there, and backed my car over it! Lucky for me it went between the tires of the car, or it would have been smashed.

I'm pretty sure alcohol was involved in both incidents.
