Did my first full-on so-called "new" country gig last night. Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley, etc. Some seriously heavy guitar tones. Like '90s post-grunge/nu-metal meets southern rock.

I dropped a purple Super Distortion and PAF Pro in the Y2D, ran a Vox Satch Ice 9 into a 200 Watt mono block driving my '90s Mesa cabinet, drop-D tuned, and went to town. Actually a fun gig. Even agreed to do another.

Anyone else gigging this new country stuff?

To satisfy the 'pics or it didn't happen' rule, here I am, in hat and matching purple shirt:

539298_497810326896612_621544938_n.jpg The duo that I play in does some stuff like that- couple Jason Aldean tunes, Luke Bryan, Craig Morgan, billy currington. He plays acoustic and sings, I play electric and definitely don't sing, for everyone's benefit. I come from more of a rock/metal background, but I'm getting the hang of it and it's pretty fun to play!

At my age, I've come to appreciate many more styles of music other than "rock". Because of our fellow forumite Craig, I've really gotten to love Lady Antebellum. Country has crossed over more towards rock with many respects so I totally hear you when you mention the heavy rock tones.

I say good for you and glad you had fun. Hell, if I had the time to play with a band I wouldn't rule out some of the more rocking country stuff. There's some incredibly well written songs and the bass lines are seriously melodic. I loves me some good bass lines.

Nice job LawDaddy!

I think as we get older our musical tastes tend to widen, or perhaps we are just a bit more open minded? I like a bit of country now and again although I couldn't bear to listen to it when I was younger.

BTW, what the heck is 'new country'?

New country is essentially pop/rock. No more tele tones, down tuned humbucker tones, no violins or banjos! :)

Great stuff ... the hat definitely says "don't mess with me ... I'm country dammit".

I never really get to play any country, but we do a few swampy tunes (i.e. Ophelia/The Band) where I scramble to step on the compressor and pull off my best chicken' pickin' licks.

The older I get, the more I like the more folksy-rootsy country stuff.

We do throw some classic country in there. But I would call this new country stuff pop/metal at times. Fun to play nonetheless.

Nothing wrong with a little country/progressive country now and then! Both listening and playing;just not a steady diet;)
