Having had the opportunity to play several different fretless MM's in the last week I've come to some conclusions I thought I'd share:
1. My new fretless beckons me to practice. Don't know if it is the added challenge of finger placement or simply forcing me to really listen to what I'm playing, but it really makes me want to play music again. (don't ask why I'm typing this instead of playing...
)
2. I am very glad I gave up the piezo for the 3-band. Paul's MG really had me questioning the decision to go with the 3-band. The upright tone out of his fretless bongo is phenominal. It is fat with just the right woodiness. Then I tried NorM's fretless Sterling. I twiddled the knobs and changed my right-hand position but couldn't get that magical upright tone I heard on Paul's MG. Then it smacked me upside my head like a horse in heat
confused: no clue but I like the alliteration): Flats vs. Rounds.
3. I'm sticking with rounds on this baby. I can get some really cool tones out of this bad boy. Even more fun when I'm wielding a pick. Playing a pick on a fretless with roundwounds = my kind of heaven.
4. 5 more posts to 3k. If I had a dollar for every post I'd have a very nice Markbass rig.
discuss,
