Idle roasted wish

I've never particularly gone for maple necks because to me the near-inevitable soiling mojo doesn't look good, but I've been really drooling over those GC platinum specials with the roasted maple fretboards. Gorgeous, and not only because of the figuring. The color itself is amazing.

Wouldn't it be cool if necks were offered in oil/wax maple, rosewood or roasted as part of the regular line?

Figured wood is obviously not possible in mass production for the same sustainability reasons that sucky tops are BFR-only, but roasted could be since it's a process and not a material.

Just a daydream... but a nice one.

Probably depends on how the roasted maple looks if it's not done using figured maple.

I asked this question to BP in another thread, and he said you would loose the figuring aspect of the roasted neck if it wasn't sealed.

Actually, I meant three variations:

- Oil/wax, maple fretboard same as current
- Oil/wax, rosewood fretboard same as current
- Roasted, maple fretboard, sealed all the way around

Never occurred to me that roasted would work without the finish.

Re how it looks... well, we've seen figured maple necks and plain maple necks in oil/wax. The difference would be similar, no?

I'm just digging the color, is all.

I'd love to see those roasted necks on the classic line as I'm really jonesing for a model with a mute-bridge (love it on my 100th NAMM!) and those necks (especially that roasted maple board neck) are absolutely KILLER!

I'd dig it! I personally would love to see the mute equipped bridge on a two pickup bass. A HH classic with roasted neck and mute bridge would be very appealing to me!

Until you have played a maple fretboard on a MM you haven't lived. The necks always feel faster than rosewood. And the tone is punchier! Roasting does bring out the beauty!

i hear what you're saying.....love the rosewood and all but,i have a few maple necked stringed things here and they are really nice to play.

one day.......one freakin' day i will have a natural HS Sterling with a maple neck......

When I saw those necks, though, I just thought they'd look great on a Big Al or Bongo. Mere idle amusement, nothing more. In no way am I asking for such a thing to happen.

But I sure wouldn't feel bad if it did.

I'd love to see a Roasted all maple fretless.... On anything really.... Maybe an Earthwood?!?!? LOL... But that's another thread all together.

They are incredible offerings. I was very near the danger zone with the Bongo 5HH TPB had, but someone put me out of my misery pretty quickly. What a package.
