WHAT?!?!?! Are you kidding me? The only song they had in the 80's was a Stevie Wonder cover!

How can you say that with bands like Van Halen, Toto, RUsh, The Clash, The Cars, The Cure, Crowded House, David Byrn, Bowie, Queen, THe Police, The GoGo's and FREKING PETER GABRIEL around?!?!? Those are just the ones that I can think of off the top of my head because I am so BOGGLED!

Anyway, I just had to get that off my chest.

Please feel free to continue this topic.....

The CHILI PEPPERS RULED THE 80's?!?!?!

Dees, it's a greatest hits package, with 3 new songs. See my thread in Guitars entitled "New VH links" for all 3 songs.

I like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers myself, but I'm sorry, if any band "ruled the 80s", it was without a doubt Van Halen. They were the most influential hard rock band of the 80s. Van Halen was the template that all of the 80s Hair Metal bands followed. If you don't believe me, watch some old footage of Dave's stage antics from '78, and then watch Bret Micheals from Poison or Vince Neil from Motley Crue.
Alex Van Halen was setting his drums on fire and burning his hair off before Nikki Sixx was lighting his pants on fire. And unlike the Hair Metal bands of the 80s, Van Halen endured well into the 90s, and would have continued if they hadn't self destructed.

Motley Crue would probably be in the top 5 along with Def Leppard and Bon Jovi as far as influence and popularity.

Van Halen Rules
...

Says it all and STILL stands the test of time.

Also ... I'm not sure where all you guys were in the 80's, but I can assure you ...
I wasn't listening to "the go gos", "crowded house", or "Peter Gabrial".
No disrespect, but when I think of the 80's, I think more of all of the awesome shredders that were out there. Anyone remember "Shrapnel Records"? :D

And what ever happened to these guys? ...

* Jake E. Lee
* Brad Gillis
* Marty Freidman
* Jeff Watson
* George Lynch
* Jason Becker
* Tony MacAlpine
* The list goes on and on ...

I'd love to see a "Where Are They Now" episode on VH-1.

You were missing out bro! :) Well, maybe not on the Go Go's, but Security by Peter Gabriel is one of the best progressive rock albums of all time! Oh and the Finn brothers are great song writers! Ok, had to back those boys up a bit. Now on to your other questions:

Anyway, here is an update on those shredders, as far as I know (please feel to correct me if I am wrong):

* Jake E. Lee - Played in Badlands after Ozzie, then kind of dissappeared. Not sure what he is up to now.

* Brad Gillis - Not sure.

* Marty Freidman - Just released a new live album on Favored Nations.

* Jeff Watson - I think he is still putting out albums independently, but he is also writing music for TV and movies.

* George Lynch - Got back with Dokken recently, then left again. Probably working on his abs right this moment...

* Jason Becker - After he got ALS, he kind of dropped off the face of the earth (understandably so!). He is still writing music and I think he just released a new album of live stuff.

* Tony MacAlpine - He just released a new album the past two years or so on Favored Nations.

* The list goes on and on ...
