I thought bass players always had to stand in the dark corner of the stage. Playing blind is something important for sure. Maybe that is just the ugly bass players like me :)

Thanks all for the great advice. Interesting comments about using a 5 vs. 4 for P&W. I'll have to think about that. One of my thoughts is that if I am going to learn bass should I just go for the 5 from the beginning or keep it simpler...I haven't decided that yet. How many of you started with a 5? The 6 is a whole other beast altogether that doesn't really interest me.

I have looked into the Groovin' DVD's and will order them. I have also thought about Friedland's resources and anything by Abe Laboriel would be groovy. I do have the Bass Day DVD and like it but it's limited mostly to "gee whiz".

One "problem" is that I don't have access to a great bass selection to try before I buy. There is only one music store around that has MM and they have one 4 string Ray that is not what I am looking for. Their price is also $400 higher than most. I'm used to buying sight unseen...I just do a lot of research before pulling the trigger.

Lots here to think about and I appreciate everyone's input. Keep the comments coming.

Honestly starting with a 4 might be better for a guitar player. You should already know the fret board. That said. The 5 is a B string which puts the fifth below that E string. Once you are onto playing a bass that is not a hard transition to make. IMHO.

The important part of the switch is from my recollection is learning to be part of the foundation of the music. You are the step between the guitar and drums. There is a space you have to learn to fill and once you find it that space is called nirvana.

Buy whatever gets you to that place easily. It is up to you. You are the one whom has to feel it to get where you are trying to go.

Guys like Alva are excellent teachers. It doesn't hurt to get to speaking with some of them.

imho
