But someone asked tonight what I said after Sterling gave me that Bongo, and I thought - I don't know. I must have said something. But I was in shock. So here is what I wish I would have said, if only I hadn't been so open-mouthed in awe.
"Defending the Bongo against all the naysayers was the best job I ever had, if somewhat frustrating at times. "Play the thing, you idiots!" was really all I should said - over and over and over. I should also thank those guys with the original humor - "Hey, a toilet seat! Har har har." Thank them because without their inane comments, I never would have become The Bongo Evangelist. They were what brought me here, in a way, at least in part. I should thank them over and over again for giving me the opportunity to somehow be noticed by Sterling Ball.
And Steve Barr - I should thank him, too! He yanked my Bongo chain early and often and with a gleam in his eye. Sometimes he was serious, but mostly it was a game Steve and I played for the benefit of our adoring public, heh heh, in our sinister rise to the top of the Internet Personality Heap.
Steve told me that a while back, by the way - that I was an Internet Personality. I said, "Maybe, maybe not, but if it's true, the pay sure sucks."
Hey! Today is payday for one Internet Personality!
So raise your glasses to those who thought Sterling was nuts.
This bass is very cool. This bass will be with me forever. Someday my four year old will tell his pals, "This is the bass that Sterling Ball gave my dad."
Even more important, Sterling Ball is a friend of mine. He has this sense of family, and once you're in, you know. I'm not at the level of the guys he's known forever, the Steve Lukathers and John Ferraros, but I'm in nonetheless. I'm sure of it because I woke his wife up one night - don't do that - and he still likes me.
The people at the company, too, treat me like I'm one of them, and that makes me feel pretty damned special. Scotty, Dan McPherson, Aziah, Derek Brooks, Beth and Dudley and Julie who answers the phone - and Jon who has helped me and many of you so many times....
I thank you, Sterling, and I thank all the guys who I suspect worked hard and at the last minute to make this bass a reality.
And to the forum members! Even the really annoying ones. I became a moderator almost by accident, because back in the old days it was mostly just Derek and Jon trying to handle things - and they had real jobs, too. If I weren't a moderator at the EBMM Forum, I don't think I'd be here, and I guess it stands to reason that if you people weren't so damned rabid about these basses and guitars, there wouldn't be a need for moderators.
So to you, the rabid forumites - thank you, too.
Sterling Ball - you rock. Thank you, America! Goodnight!"
There. That is what I would said if I were really smart.
