I just may go with an Original Petrucci, and not worry about the BFR for now. I was watching the Dream Theater Score Video, and JP's tone is phenominal. So it cant be that big of a difference, between his BFR.

The original is just as amazing as the BFR. Just without as much eye candy.

For a significant amount of time, he played the first BFR prototype. Personally, I think it's a big difference. That being said, the original JP is also great guitar.

I keep going back and forth on this decision too. Now I'm leaning towards the original because I love the arm contour and the unfinished neck. Also, the BFR finishes are so gorgeous that I'd be afraid to go nuts when playing. At least that's what I'm thinking at this minute. :D

Dont worry too much about the BFR arm contour - I loved the original contour but I do not notice a difference at all with the BFR although it's obviously different. Weird I know.

The finishes on any of the JP's i've had are like fricken armor... the JP6 I have had for a year is still mirror perfect -and I've spilled god knows how many beers all over it

For me, an "original" JP does the trick. It's by no means sub-par just because the BFR series exists. People debate the finished neck more than anything. Some people refuse the BFR because it's finished. Tonally, they're similar guitars, and in feel they are practically the same.

It's not like the original JP is now a "budget" guitar. It's still a more expensive, high-end, great sounding axe, in my eyes.

Now another thing. I pick with my index finger and thumb, but my fingers dont crunch in my hand. My Middle, Ring, and pinky are the 3 fingers that poke out when I play. Will the toggle switch get in my way when I play?

i had this worry when i got my JP. and i too pick with a similar right hand position. i purchased it from an online dealer w/o ever having played one. the second i got it i sat down and put the "will i hit the switch?" question to the test... i NEVER, ever hit it.

i was worried about the same thing but for me it was a complete non issue and im sure it'll fine for you as well

Alright thanks.

But with my OLP, I wont completely flick the switch, but I will bump into it. And It does get in the way after awhile. IDK, I dont care what I have to change about my playing, Im getting one :D

I personally have a problem with guitars being too pretty. I feel it kinda gives me a less credible impression to the guitarist (JP & SM excluded). That's why I never really liked the PRS guitarists either.

Hence I got the priginal Mystic Dream... heheheh...

I can potentially hit the switch when full-on strumming, although I usually don't. The JP isn't a strumming kind of guitar anyway, it's more of a shred-prog guitar.

I find that the PUP selector switch is small enough that I can avoid it. Unfortunately I am still getting used to avoiding hitting the upper piezo/magnetic switch.:( That's unlike any other guitar.

I feared the same thing especially after owning a Steve Morse model years ago. When I owned the SM I actually took the toggle out because it was bothering me so much. I thought the JP would be similar but it isn't. I have zero problem w/ the toggle location. It seems to be in the perfect spot to flipback and forth though.

I will barely strum. Only when I am doing chording for backing a lead, or just a chorus or rhythm. But When I play I basically shred.

Yes, if you get any JP with a piezo, and you play aggressively you'll probably be bumping into the switch. I do. You'd have to learn to adjust. But I'm sure this is by design, so there is no fumbling for the switch. Just a flick of the ring finger.

I'm almost used to it, it's really not too big a deal at all.

They are completely different guitars sonicly. The BFR is more alive and has more harmonics and complexity. Save your $, as the looks are just the tip of the iceberg.
