There are lots of knuckleheads posting up all the cool new MM gear that's become available lately, like the roasteds and all. I get really bad GAS when looking at them as well as the videos of the new GC. Then I drag my single H Bongo out to a gig and my GAS quickly subsides. When I want it to growl, it growls. When I need thump-n-pump, it's there with some left over. When it's slap-n-pull time, which is not my forte, it responds like a champion. And the variety of tones don't come by changing any of the settings. I just move my right hand from the bridge toward the neck to radically change the tone. The sound that has been in my head for years comes out of a very simple rig - a Bongo 4H with EB flats, a cable and a MarkBass rig set pretty flat.
I will undoubtedly own a GC within the next few months and more MMs if my buying history is a predictor of the future. And I'm not knocking the HH models, which I've owned, or the HS and SSS models, which I still own. But for those forum readers that have never tried a Bongo single H, it's worth tracking one down to try one. Or do like I did - just buy one sight unseen. Its tone and voicing will not disappoint.
