Hello all, I've been looking around for a new bass for a while and found this magnificent stingray in a local shop. It is a magical ray that sounds and feels like no other. I took the serial number, 32506 and asked Aziah about it and she said it didn't register in the Ernie Ball database. So I went back there today and took note of some details, hopefully with these details someone can tell me exactly what I'm looking at here.

1. The bridge has the serial number printed on it, in the space below the screws that are used to adjust intonation.

2. The body is this aqua blue color. Like, teal. You can see the grain of the wood through the finish. Unfortunately I can't remember if it was a one piece body or whatnot. EDIT: after browsing the EB finish sticky thread, the finish on this bass is in fact "trans teal." I am sure of it.

3. 2 band eq, one volume knob. Single humbucker. EDIT: also has the bridge mutes.

4. The neckplate is 4 bolt, does not say "Ernie Ball" on it anywhere, only Music Man and of course the Music Man insignia.

5. Here's what's baffling, the neck is a bird'seye maple with rosewood fretboard, it has a gloss finish and does say "Ernie Ball Music Man" on the headstock, made in San Luis Obispo, CA (my home town!). Now I have seen some of the new classic stingray necks, this neck is not one of them (the figure is nowhere near that of the modern classic rays...Mr. Ball seriously knows where the wood with good figure is at these days). The tuners are like the neckplate in the sense that they only say music man and have the music man insignia, they also look pretty old as they were a shiny chrome that have clearly oxidized a bit.

So....what? The store owner is pretty knowledgable and he says it's probably a transition bass, that is, it was one of the first ones to come out of the Ernie Ball factory but with leftover music man parts (particularly, the body and tuners). What do you guys think? I know pictures are best but I unfortunately the bass isn't mine...yet:D
EDIT: I saw a thread on how to date the original musicman stingray pots, but I don't know the code for dating EB ones. Anyone know how to date early EB stingray pots?

Any responses greatly appreciated :)

Won't have any pics until I can take her home, which will probably be November 5th. Another thing I remember is that the neck had a bullet trussrod, adjusted at the headstock and not the neck butt, if that changes anything.

Anyone else?:)

What store is this and where is it located? I would be really interested in calling this place and asking the people there some questions about the bass.

Um, guys? Let's not do this. Aziah is in fact a female as I'm sure A.J. - her boyfriend - can attest to this.

Mmmmmkay?

serial number is circa 1991

Thanks! But how do you know this if Aziah says it doesn't register in the data base? I did some reading and found out that EB introduced the 6 bolt neckplate for the SR 4's in 1991. Since this bass has a 4 bolt neck, I'm guessing it might be a little earlier than that? I'm totally new to all this musicman stuff. Also since the serial isn't prefixed, the bridge is in fact an EB bridge. So it is probably a stingray made a little before or in 1991 and is in fact completely EBMM? I guess the only way to know for sure is to look at the date on the neck, which I will do when I purchase the bass.

To JayDawg, the store is Lightning Joe's Guitar Heaven. Great people there, Joe is a boss. Let me know if you find anything!

Also, if Aziah reads this, she should know that my apologies go out to her:)

You've recorded the serial number correctly? From your description it sure sounds like an EB Bass.

Lightning Joe's is my old stomping grounds, bought my very first bass from Joe.

That bass is simply a late 80's to possibly very early 90's. You can see if there is a date or sticker under the control plate, and you can check the pot codes for a round-about date. Naturally removing the neck will probably reveal a date as well.
Yes, neck figuring was very common during that time, and yes the necks were glossed then too. And correct, only the headstock decal is going to have the EBMM in the logo while all the metal parts will have just the MM logo.
Sounds like a pretty awesome bass you discovered there...2-bands are my favorite! It was always rare to find old Rays at Joes place when I lived in the area.

Yeah? I bought my first bass from Joe too, a stupid Affinity Pbass! How long ago was your last visit to old Joe's? You should see them now, they got a Fender dealership and business is booming, packed every saturday with kids and guitars flying out the door.

The more I read, the more I think I you're right. The old musicman bridges had prefixed serial numbers and the one on this bass is only 5 digits (and yes, despite Aziah saying it doesn't register in the database, I double checked and I do believe I have the right number), no prefix. No reason to believe anything about it was leftover from the original musicman stock. Do you know the dating codes for Ernie Ball SR pots? I already found a thread for dating the original musicman ones, can't seem to find the EB code though (are they the same?).
...not just an awesome bass, a bass touched by the bass gods. I could go on the Talkbass classifieds and get a similar ray for way less than what Joe is asking...but I have yet to play another ray like it...has no equal.

When I get the bass I'll take some pics just because I know you all are curious now:D

Yes, pots were the same number sequence probably 137-dd-ww. The 'dd' meaning the year.

Then you found a really awesome axe! Last time I cruised by Joe's was 2007.

Alright people, I promised that I would have pics when the bass came into my hands...so here they are! :) The body dates November 11, 1985 and the neck dates December 14, 1989. So I guess someone had a stingray back in 85 and decided to get a different neck 4 years later? The neck is bird'seye maple, 1 piece, gloss finish with rosewood fretboard. Was that the "standard" stingray 4 neck for that year? Anyways it is an amazing bass, I am very happy with it.
