Anyone tried installing a Kahler tremolo bridge on a Bongo or any MM basses before? I just want to know if there will be any compability issues.

I personally would not do it but its your bass man.

Most tremolo's are not simple bolt on jobs. Make sure you check whether you have to route the body for it or not. Ask the retailer to recommend a Luthier if so.

Just a little FYI:

Unless I'm very much mistaken, BP has indicated that a major component of the Music Man sound is the way the bridge is attached to the body. Specifically, using two large machine screws that go into metal inserts in addition to the regular screws.

An alternate bridge will change that.

Well i'm not gonna attempt it myself though, i'm def going to a skilled luthier for that.

And i'm not gonna attempt it now D: Not until my Bongo's like more than 5 year old at the very least.

Might get a cheap Ibanez and try it on that first.

Sacrificing a cheapo Ibanez instead of doing major surgery on your Music Man sounds like a really good idea.

Get the tremolo urge out of your system and decide if you really want one before hacking up a Bongo.

I considered putting a trem on a bass many years ago, but after thinking about it for a while, decided it was probably not a particularly good idea. I'm glad I didn't.

Tremelo's do not work well on basses because of the high spring tension needed. Plus, staying in tune is tough!

Haven't done it on a Bongo; however my first bass has a khaler installed. The cavity has to be routed for it but there were no install issues. Tuning isn't a major issue because I don't go nuts with it, but I also keep graphite sprayed on the nut. I do break a few string with it but it is usually when they are old. I had some problems keeping the nut in place (my bass has a swept headstock) but a Bongo shouldn't have this issue. All in all, it has an 80's coolness factor to it but in the reality of playing it sees little use other than the odd string bend here and there.

My kahler stays in tune pretty well unless I crank on it but mine is installed on a pedulla. It will definitely change the sound of your bass.

It seems like a better idea on a Ray or Sterling than a Bongo because of the Bongo's basswood body. I'm a basswood fan, but it's soft and I'd be concerned about screws stripping out.
