Intonation question

Hey guys,

I've always had a problem intonating the G string on my Pet. It is sharp and I end up tightening the screw all the way and the intonation is still a little sharp. I was just setting up a Pet for low D tuning and the same problem arose. I cannot inotate the F (G) string because the screw is tightened all the way and it is still a little sharp. Does anyone know how to fix this. I there something I can do before set up? Should I loosen the screw all the way before I put the new string on?

could be a bad string----or the nut slot could be off ie:the strings take off point is not at the very front of the nut----if there is not sufficent back filing or break angle towards the tuners from the back of the nut it can cause intonation problems and buzzing.

You can also cut the spring so you can get a little more...

Is this just on one particular one or on all of yours that you've had this issue?

I would assume that if you have to resort to cutting down the retainer spring on the bridge saddle ---you definitely have a nut problem goin on---the bridge saddle shouldn't have to be backed up that far for proper intonation.

I cut those springs down all the time. If you like a higher action, you need more compensation at the bridge. So cut the springs and don't look back.

Make sure you don't have any material hanging over the nut on the fingerboard side that could change the "break" point of the string.

This happened to me on my second JP7. There was just a bit of material from the nut pushed forward on the D string and it would not intonate properly.

I noticed the material there on a string change. I trimmed it off with an Xacto knife and it's been fine since.

Wonderdog---yeah I definitely overlooked that point--especially if you use alot of neck relief---I'm in the Eric Johson camp-----I like my boards dead straight.

I had to cut the low E string springs on both my Sil Specs.
