Does the straplok system (duncan or otherwise) require anything special to install on a Stingray? Or is it just plug & play?

How about the Duncan 'dual-design' version?

What are everyone's opinions on any of these?

You have to take out the strap nuts which are already on your base replace them with new ones. I have the dunlop dual design ones and i had to do that.

Right, but no additional drilling or futzing with it is necessary. Just remove the old strap screws & screw the new ones in, right?

Thanks!

It's easy, yup, no drilling or using precise measurements, none of that.

Couple of notes:

1. Stash the original strap buttons in a small ziploc bag in the case. Yes, you might need them someday.

2. Rub the replacement screws with a bar of soap. I don't care if they're not dirty! It actually makes them slide into the wood nice and easy.

3. Tighten but do not overtighten the strap loks. Tighten 'em down too snug and you can put a nice crack in the finish.

Do you move around a lot when playing? I've never needed staplocks. When I play, I'm usually just standing still, ocassionally shifting feet. And if I feel really daring, I'll turn around and give the drummer a nod.

Nobody's forcing you to buy straplocks, but for a few bucks they're very cheap peace of mind compared to what could happen if your instrument free falls from a height of a few feet.

Makes sense... In the past, I played cheap bass guitars. That is, basses that couldn't match the StingRay. The initiative to protect such pieces of crap back then wasn't there. Hahaha

I move around quite a bit, from stepping off stage & back on, moving through the bar as I play, generally putting on a good rock n roll show, and have had my prior bass unhook a couple of times.

Luckily I was able to keep it from hitting the ground, but don't want to have to worry about that anymore.

What are the differences between the two Dunlops (original & dual design)? Are there advantages to either?

I've got the original dunlop strap locks and when I was trying to put them in I found the screw felt tight while I was tightening it (even after the soap). Is that normal?

Dunlops here, too. BTW, the screw might seem tight because sometimes the staplock screws are longer than the ones that hold on the strap buttons.

Ah, virgin wood.

Well, I ordered a set of the Dunlop Dual-Design Straplocks. I get my bass back from the set-up / fret dress on Saturday afternoon & will install them before the show on Saturday night.

I'll let you all know my experience.

the screws i got with my schallers were to small for my p-bass. so i had to drill out the strap button and then ground down the head on a new screw, which was a longer wood screw cuz i stripped out the hole trying to put em in. stupid screws, they were ven to small for my les paul. and it was the exact same set of strap locks. but let me tell you, i will never have to worry about them coming out, ever.
