Is it possible to create a active/passive switch on a Stingray5?
How?

For one of the bands Im playing in, overdrive is an important part of my sound. I currently use a passive Rickenbacker with overdrive and it rocks. But with my Stingray it sounds rubbish. And I really need the B string of my Ray. So I would like to switch to passive sometimes so it goes better together with overdrive. Also when ill have such a switch Ill still have the active Ray sound I really love... You see my problem? :)

Well, I haven't looked at the circuit, but it seems to me that you could just tap the leads for the pickup and run those to the output jack with a switch in between to bypass the preamp. Anybody know?

I think it would be possible to intercept the wires from the pup to the preamp and put in a switch but you could only do it for parallel mode.

In single coil and series modes the coils are centre tapped to ground providing a balanced input to the pre-amp and introducing any switching is nigh impossible.

Radial Bassbones DI......then you can use two different basses (passive and active) without touching any of the Ray's guts. Just a suggestion....

Well I would like some kind of stomp box or DI which will make the active signal of my Ray passive or is that impossible?

I vote impossible. I don't know that going passive will solve your problem. I play with distortion also. Try adjusting the volume of your Stingray so the output matches the output of the Rick and then use the mid control to dial in more or less distortion. I always set my distortion so it plays clean with the volume about half up on active basses so I can add or remove distortion with the volume knob.

I say immpossible without destroying the EB, but I could be wrong. The Bassbone will allow you to set each bass up individually to give similar output to the board while retainingthe "sound" of each instrument. Switch beteewn the two with the click of a footswith. You can get an awesome overdriven sound from your Ray, just not the same way as the passive Ric. I say again.....Radial Bassbone. $200 and you get the best of both....

I have a Stingray 4 and it has a switch installed for Active/Passive. Works well..........I bought the instrument used and not sure how it is wired.......but it is possible. If the battery goes during performance it comes in handy......:) You can see the Mini Toggle switch between the Volume control and the Treble control........

To do this mod on a Ray 4 is easy as the coils are permanently wired in parallel and the pre-amp has a single input. It's the coil switching of the SR5 that makes it difficult. I agree with the majority in that an outboard solution would be best.

That SR4 seems to have a Bart pick up, and therefore probably a Bart preamp as well. "Rape" i scream:p

It also has D'addario Chromes on it. It plays smooth as silk and the Bart gives it a great bottom. Best playing and sounding Bass for my application that I've found.

Ya do what ya gotta do my friend...........:)
