Hello everyone. This might be a super dumb question, but please hear me out.

I’ve recently acquired a JP60 in Metallic Black. It is my first SBMM and my first guitar in the Petrucci series. I was immediately blown away by the ergonomics of the guitar. For me, it is the most comfortable guitar I’ve ever own, and I would even dare to say it is the most innovative shape since the invention of the RG or PRS. I can only dream what a true JP6 EMBB can accomplish in terms of sound, shape, and craft. Also, in my opinion the JPX and its subsequent iterations feels more like a regression (in terms of shape and ergonomics that is) rather than an evolution.

I’m very aware that I am ultra late to the party. The JP6 isn’t a priority anymore to the Perrucci/EBMM agenda and there has been some speculation about its possible discountinuation. This makes me very sad and nervous as I would love this series to keep going with some few refreshes every now and then. Yeah, the JP6 XX and the JP60 are still being sold, and there a couple of models in the second hand market. But I would hate to see this line gone, as I would love to start collecting them and to get excited as what new finishes/configs I can expect each X amount of time (think of the RG series for instance).

So my question for all of you is, should I jump ship now to the JP15 and Majesty series? Or do you guys think the JP6 is here to stay, just not as often as it was previously?

I am confused about what the objective here is.

In general it isn't wise to idealize a guitar without having played it for a while. For all you know your JP60 is already very good.

Take into account that your tastes will change with time. Today the JP60 is your perfect guitar and that's great because a lot of people take time to find the good one.
Nothing lasts forever but the certainty of change

I thought the JP “standard“ line of guitars was already discontinued?
Leaving only the JP15 and Majesty.
And JP 25th Anniversary Model, even though they‘re probably sold by now.
I‘ve got 4 JPs that had the Original Bodyshape and Oil&Wax Necks and always found them to be superior over the BFR and other iterations over the years. Even though the BFR Maple Top guitars looked sick!
The Ergonomics with the forearm scoop and overall design always felt more comfortable to me. Though that‘s obviously not Petrucci‘s preference anymore.

Theres always used jp6s available. They were in production for 20 years or so. Of course they will now start to sell at much more of a premium being discontinued.

To the OP - you said the JPX and beyond felt like regressions. I totally agree (except the Majesty). I was very confused about the appearance of the JP15, I only assume it was EBMM serving up a "traditional" guitar to appease those for whom the Majesty was a little extreme. Compared to the Majesty, the JP15 feels chunky and IMO offers nothing over the JP6.

But it's all personal choice ATEOTD.
