I'm rather new to Music Man guitars, but I've wanted a Silhouette for years after playing one originally about 11 years ago.

I have a chance to purchase a 2007 or 2008 Silhouette for $800, and I wanted to see if that's a good deal for it? For the most part it's in mint condition with the exception of just 1 paint chip (about 2mm in size) on the bottom underneath by the input jack towards the back side. Comes with OHSC as well. It's a Silhouette HSH, white w/ rosewood fingerboard, and the maple neck doesn't have a lot of detail or character to it... just looks like plain maple (not flame or birdseye or anything fancy like that). Neck is straight, no buzzing, and was told that other than the small paint chip (you can see the wood) that the guitar is virtually mint.

Is this a good deal?

I'm used to Ibanez Prestige and Carvin guitars, and just want to make sure that I will like the guitar. I can't play it ahead of time as this guy is out of state, so if I get it, I'm kinda stuck with it.

Any suggestions or feedback?

Thanks!

Hi
800 bucks? - that seems fine.

I've seen a lot of Silos with plain maple necks - so that's normal. You get the "odd stunner" of a neck creeping thro, but I guess that's just luck of the draw.

yep I think you can go for it eyes closed and if you don't like it you won't loose anything if you resell it

Thanks for the input guys, I'll email the guy right now and tell him I'll get it. :)

This means I might have a 'NGD' thread to post soon! ;)

i was able to get my Second Silhouette for $850... mine was dead mint and the guy had to sell it because he just dropped almost 4k on another guitar and was trying to recoup some funds quickly...

i think you'll find it to be the best guitar you'll own... and you'll have more NGD posts... :)

Well, I'm still thinking about it. I have another offer, same price, for a different one now in MINT condition. My only concern is I'm so used to playing guitars w/ a flat 15-20" radius, I'm worried the transition to a 10" might be too much.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I used to play only the well known RG models, which I think have a radius in that region. My favourite Music Man is the AL which also has a 10" radius. I had no problems with that transition, but that's just me. Did not slow me down in anyway. (I'm not a really fast player, but still...)

Many years go I switched from 12" to 7.25" without any difficulty at all. The 10" on my Silhouette Special is just a joy to play. I think it's the perfect number.

Going from, say, 15" it may take a little time to get used to but honestly, I think you'll love it.

Thanks guys. Yeah I did play one of these 10 years ago, but back then I also didn't have as defined tastes (or pickyness) about my guitars as I do now. The way I remember it might be different than the way it might be. Haha. I'm going to go play some fender strats during my lunch break today and see how I like the 9.5"-10" radius.

The one I'm looking at purchasing is a dead-MINT Silo Special w/ maple board, HSS config, "Candy Apple Red" with the white pickguard for $825. The other one was $825, and was a regular Silo (24 fret HSH config) w/ rosewood board, white w/ black pick guard, but it had a small 2mm paint chip down to the wood on the underside by the input jack. I really like the white one, but I also like the idea of the HSS config and the fact that there's nothing wrong with it. I can't decide. Grrrr... any advice on which is a better deal of the two? (even though I know they're both good deals lol) Both were "born" around the 2007-2008 timeframe I believe.

Also, I generally like my action setup to be 2/32 off the 12th fret... can these achieve such a radius without being "buzz city"?

i think you'll really love either one...

I have a 20th Anniversary HH
Silo Special SSS with a hot rails in the bridge so technically a HSS

this is a great guitar and i can float between both guitars without any issues at all... my discerning tastes have lead me to absolutely love my EBMM guitars... i've had some real nice pieces over the years and the only ones i will buy from here on out are EBMM guitars...

I'm also wondering if I would get tired of the color red. I've never been a fan of red guitars, so I'm wondering if I should get it simply because it's mint, or if I should wait and look for a diff color. If this were a blue or teal, I would snatch it up in a heartbeat, without question. So being honest with myself (and of course you guys), I think that's where some hesitancy is coming from. Idk. :-\

I thought the same when I bought my guitars, about the colors.

Trust me, the sound of these babes make you "colorblind"...it really doesn´t matter. They all kick so much ass you will be pleased.
