is it normal for the E string to be 5 to 10 db louder than the A-G strings when plugged into a DI to a computer...

equal attacks on all strings, so its not that.

5 to 10 dB is quite a range... it is naturally louder, but I'd expected it to rather fall into the 3-6 dB range. Did you play some slapping?

PS: On a second thought, there is a good reason why there's almost always a compressor in the bass channel... the natural dynamics of the instrument are incredible and many players have a hard time fully controlling it (me included).
