Your Smiling Face by James Taylor. Sounds very Stingray to me. BTW, anyone got a link where I can download this as not available at iTunes.

It's probably Lee Sklar, who played on most of Taylor's hits for a long time. Sounds like a J bass to me, but my ear isn't very reliable on things like this.

When he was selling his basses on Ebay a few years back it was said that the part was done on a Yamaha Broad Bass 3000. Sure sounds like a Jazz to me though. For some good Stingray funk I'd check out Bernard Edwards lines on Diana Ross' "Upside Down" and "I'm Coming Up."

Hornet - totally agree. And in fact ANY Bernard Edwards bass lines - for me one of the greats for funk (and bass playing in general!). I'm a big Chic fan!
I believe he gave his Stingray to John Taylor (duran duran bass player), who has been using it on the latest tours for a couple of tracks (Notorious / We are family medley) ....
