My 1995-6 Sterling arrived today and I'm happier than ever!

I am so satisfied with the guy who sold it to me!

It came with courrier ultra-well packaged!(better than a diamond!)

He included an ultra deluxe padded case

And now the good stuff:

The bass was well polished(everything, body, neck, bridge, pg, the pegs were shining!)

Strung with new Elixir Nanowebs

And apart from the ultra mint mutes on the Flea Bridge

he included an additional new mute kit!!!!

The tone of this bass- I'm sorry to say that- kicks the hell out of the tone of my StingRay especially the slap tone!

I noted something strange with my Streling. I wanted to record some slap tunes in Pro Tools yesterday. I started with the input knob on the Pre at a very very low level and it was already clipping when I started slapping. So I had to reduce the volume on my sterling. Not until the volume knob on the Sterling was almost off the pre stopped clipping. I never had this with my StingRay. Perhaps because my Ray is 2eq? This sterling is very loud, louder and snappier than other maple sterlings that I've played with. Perhaps as Bovine says, some basses just have it....

Does your Sterling take a 9 volt battery? Sounds like it might be time for a new Duracell.

What do you mean? The reason that it is so loud is because the battery is running out?

A bad battery can cause erratic ("noisy") output. I'm not familiar with the Sterling, but if it has an active EQ like other EBMM basses, then it takes a 9-volt battery to run the preamp.

When that battery goes bad, the instrument will sound horrible.

The fact is my Sterling is very loud but sounds awesome. No distortion at all.

Well, I'd check the battery anyway... you just got that Sterling used, right? Who knows how old the battery is?

If you're clipping like that (assuming that you've properly set up the gain structure on your recording device), there's got to be some explanation... or you've got some freaky hot output!

The gain structure is alright ! That is the strange thing because those pres can tolerate a lot of kick!

Perhaps I got a freaky hot output! And I am happy! I have a true 'bone-crushing' musicman tone!

I also did another test. I plugged it in my amp, and it was bloody LOUD again with both the volume knobs on the bass and amp down. The good thing is that when I turned the sterling volume all the way up, there was absolutely no distortion.
