My eyes! They burn!

I admire your ambition, but I think the only think that could improve my Bongo is maybe some Dudley Flames.

I thought you were going to burn your hand with that soldering iron!

And why no heatsinks while you work? ;)

actually that's my buddy Steve doing the labour... you'd be amazed at a few of the things he's just "eye balled" while doing repairs and such

and besides, I can't afford to AmTrak Juan Guitarrez up here :D

ya gotta admit that the Waterbuffalo knobs are bordering on almost as cool as Dudley Flames and nearing the neighbourhood of BP's curl and 'stache...... :p

I dare say you had your reasons for "gutting" the Bongo, but would you mind sharing them.

I think I'm gonna be carrying those images with me for a long time.

Sometimes you boys baffle me. The Pre-amp IS the Bongo!

I say that as men, a thing is not truly 'ours' until we have effed with it a bit, but yeah, the whole preamp thing is just weird.

Hmmm. More power to you, Petey, but I can't imagine turning the Bongo into just another bass.* I mean--I change pickguards as often as I change my undies, but the preamp? If you're happy, I'm happy.

But, if you come near my Bongo with a soldering iron, I'll kill ya. :D

*I don't believe for a second that you will sell the original preamp, though. That's just crazy talk.

How many times will I quote Stripes on this forum?

yeeeouch, tough crowd tough crowd... ;)

well, I'm in the middle of some recording right now and it's working out great. as for the Pre-Amp being THE bass.... I'll disagree there, I rarely dig on-board pre's from the factory but to my ear, the OBP-1 is one I do like. To me the Bongo is so much more than just it's pre-amp, it's got a personality and feelings too :p

so I've turned mine into a Sadowsky/Lakland-Killer (in my own ears) but hey....

as for the warantee, ya, kinda pooched that
I dig how the 2 bands of mids react w/the fretless Bongo though and can't see messin' with that.

anywho, next tune is up!

+2.

The pre is a big part of why I just bought a Bongo (actually it was overall tone, not just the pre).

But having done the ol' brain and gonads swap myself, I understand your motivations. The stock tone just doesn't do it for you. That's all the reason you need. If the post-mutilation result is what you're looking for, it's cool.

Until my Bongo arrives, I'll be playing my trusty Carvin. There are, believe it or not, people who do like the stock Carvin electronics. I am not one of them, though I really do like the playability and workmanship of the Carvin. So out came the Carvin preamp, along with the pups, and in went Barts and an Aguilar OBP-3. I was very, very happy until I plugged in a Bongo.

no disrespect meant Dudley, really, you built what your ears wanted and I tweaked to get what my ears wanted. I still proudly display that it's a Music Man bass :(

on the flip side I fitted a U-Retro Deluxe to my Pedulla Rapture last night to get it a little closer in tone to my Bongo, which took over as my main bass the day I first plugged it in.

I'm sure it's only a matter of time before a second Bongo takes over as backup bass though.

:D :D :D
