Hi everyone!

Just want your opinion to the question in headline! I've planned buy Petrucci model for a long time BUT THEN I tried Jackson soloist sl1 guitar at my local music store...and man that is one serious guitar! I mean it's incredible. The main reasons about Jackson why I changed my mind about not getting the petrcucci after all:

-Compound radius. The neck is rounder at the nut and flattens out towards the bridge. great
-The neck is very thick (!) which I've noticed is a GOOD thing. I used to think than the thinner the neck (like my Ibanez jem 7BSB) the better and faster. But really it's vice versa. It's much easier to play for example the soloist than my jem..
-The single coils!!!!!! The sound on the single coils is just superb! I can get some serious twang like SRV etc. Also on my own songs I need that kind of twang once in a while even though I play progressive metal...
-The looks! IMHO soloist it's much more nasty looking and beautiful that petrucci models.

But then again. I've heard the Petrucci model is very good too! I've tried my friend's JP6 cr and it's by no means a bad guitar...but..

what's your opinion? Why Petrcucci? Why not etc..

Also check this stuff out:

All the songs played with Ibanez jem7bsb + engl screamer!

I dont know how u can say a Soloist looks better than a JP.

A soloist just looks like every other superstrat that was shat out in the 80s...

why petrucci ?

most comfortable guitar in THE WORLD (ESPECIALLY for metal)
I kinda have different thoughts about the neck sizes/shapes.

I have quite a few guitars, the fat necks are very comfortable that is true, but after 2h-3h and sometimes 4h of gigging/practicing your hand is fatigued, that doesn't happen with thin necks.

if you have a few shows/practicing sessions that are 4h/day for a week, a fat neck would make your wrist go bye-bye.

single coils ?

if you like SRV/blues and stuff like that, don't get a metal guitar to do that, get a blues guitar (silhouette) , don't have one guitar and expect it do something it's not supposed to, i'm sure that if you listen carefully and compare the jackson to a strat, you would think the single coils are quite bad actually.

the jackson is also built for metal, the pickups there are probably hot, so you get a really warm sound, and not the usual single coil sound.

don't expect a RV to do the work of a sports car.

get a Petrucci.

it's my #1 goto guitar and I got other guitars which are awesome, but not as awesome as this one.

You decide what guitar you want to play. Just be aware that your glowing review of Jackson products probably aren't going to go over too well on the Music Man forums. Glad to help. I'm a helper.

Are you kidding me?

1. You come to the EBMM forum and ask a question. Chances are, I could be wrong here, you will get a biased opinion. I say Petrucci...but...who am I? Both guitars are different....only you can tell which one you want. Try them both out...but...keep in mind...all Petrucci's are built to JP's specs...ALL of them. You get what he gets.

2. You kinda throw the Pet under the bus with the "looks better" comment. Personally, I could care less about looks. How does it play? How is the tone? Tuning stability? I would put a BFR Pet up against any Jackson as far as looks go.

3. You want single coils. Well...the Pet is not for you. However, the Silo or the AL is.

Just trying to let you know that forums are funny. The Jackson guys will tell you Jackson all the way. I will tell you EBMM all the way. However, I don't go to the Jackson site and disrespect thier product. Please don't do that here.

All in all...I hope you find the guitar for YOU. Whether it is an EBMM or a Jackson. Just as long as you are happy and continue to progress.

try the hamer.....hehehehehe

It is what you like. Period. I love choices and how can you say top quality stuff is better prettier or sexier it is in the eye of the beholder. The first thing I would do is make up your own mind. Asking for advice from strangers is stranger than strange.

Just as long as you play guitar you are ok with me. Your post may suck but you are fine!

The whole post sounded a bit like... ummm, casually walking into a Yamaha dealership and asking them if they think the new Ducati DESMOSEDICI looks better or rides better than Valentino Rossi's M1 race replica model.... I mean gee, that's cruisin' for bruisin' you'd get lapidated in Turkey for less than that! :)

Apologizing for length.

But if he goes with the JP then his top is gonna suck too!:p

Kidding. BP is right. You seem like you've already made up your mind and are only asking our opinions as a formality. Us spouting our opinions isn't going to convince you thoroughly, it all just depends on what you want.

Personally, I agree with what was said earlier. Jackson's do look like every other 80's super strat (for my money, old school Charvel's were ****ing cool). As far as thin necks go, that all depends on the player. For me, thin necks cramp the hell out of my hand after 10 minutes. Thicker necks (*cough*axis*cough*) are the most comfortable for me, but then again I have an abnormally large _______ that I'm used to holding.

Kidding. So when all is said and done, you're going to get what you're going to get. If you have questions in regards to the different types of woods/options of EBMM models, by all means come back and ask. But if you want us to flame another company, you'd be better off going to a f*$#r forum.

Well you already posted so you looked for this: What you need is another EBMM model! try the Silhouette! 24 frets, 2 humbuckers 1 single coil that are easy to swap for any you like, option of hardtail or vintage trem (the mechanics are the same as the JP, you can make it float and it's more stable than your average Floyd) VERY confortable neck, not too thin, not too chunky, PERFECT fretwork on every model that comes out of the factory, lots of body and pickguard colors to choose, choice of maple or rosewood fretboard, matching headstock... I mean, it's obvious you want a Silhouette :D

I had two SL2H-MAHs. Awesome guitars, but I couldn't love the neck.
I tried a JP and the neck was great. This where you spend your time as a guitarist.
I ended up not liking the standard JP forearm cut where the edge meets the top of the body, too sharp for me (now excellent with the BFR JP).
I had an EVH way back when, so now I have gone to all Axis'. I don't need a floating FR. It has the bite and tone I look for. Back to the main reason, the best necks in the industry. There's nothing like the bare maple or rosewood in your palm.
IMO-YMMV.

Oh! boy did you walk into this one decayingwings you just got yourself in front of the shooting range:D. Well let me say i had a couple of JP6's and nothing comes close to them they play like butta (love my BALLS), but if you are into the 80's superstrat vibe like Jackson's or Charvel's there is no harm in that it will come down to personal preference. I like Jackson's, Charvel's, Fender and Les paul's too all great guitars, but i would not dare compare those guitars to an EBMM they are just all different kind of animals, and that i don't want to get hung here:eek: All in all if you decide to go with the other good luck, but don't go for the looks play them both for a while and then make your decision if you go for a JP6 go for the BFR it will blow anything i have ever played out of the water, and it has a coil split that will give you the single coil sound if you want and well the looks let me say it will just amaze you how stunning it looks.

It seems like you made your decision according to your post. It sounds like you like the Jackson more and like others say, get what YOU like.

I personally have a Jackson (not a soloist though) and the JP eats it alive in every aspect, especially beauty. The funny thing is that I don't even own a JP (yet) muahahah.

Good luck with your choice

As a former Jackson/Charvel guitar whore (including 2 Shannon-built Soloists), I can appreciate those guitars for what they are and what they do. Up until a few months ago when I bought 2 new EBMM's, my '91 Jackson Soloist was the absolute best playing/sounding guitar I've owned. After I sold it about 4 years ago, I was on a quest to find a guitar that played that well but wasn't a one-trick pony (let's face it, Jackson are good for metal and that's it) - and I found it (twice) with my EBMM's. Would I even consider another Jackson now or in the future? I doubt it. I don't like what Jackson has become over the past few years and their products don't appeal to me any more.

People who make posts like this just like to stir sh*t up, but I think most of us would at least give you a pat on the back for considering a Petrucci. Now just go buy one.

Well, it's obvious you should pick the guitar you like better given your own preferences. However, since you're asking why some of us prefer the JPs to the Soloists, I'll tell you why I do.

If Carvin and Music Man didn't exist, there's a pretty good chance I'd end up with a Jackson, maybe even a Soloist.

Here's why I bought a Petrucci rather than an SL1:
1. I prefer thinner necks. For me, the Petruccis play much better than Jacksons do.
2. I like piezos.
3. The Petrucci stays in tune almost as well as a FR, but it doesn't have the hassle of a locking trem system.
4. I don't like single coils unless I'm playing blues or clean. I spend a lot of time playing leads, and I use my neck pickup for that. A single coil doesn't work well (in my experience) for high gain lead sounds.
5. The Petruccis sound better, in my taste.
6. The Jacksons I've played frequently are set up poorly. The Music Man guitars always play well. Heck, I played a backbowed Petrucci and it still was awesome as long as I stayed above the third fret!
7. I don't like binding on necks.
8. I'm a fan of Petrucci's and want to get his sound, so buying his guitar is a good idea.

Well thanks for the comments! Some are getting heated up 'bout my "looks" comment..didn't meant to be disrespectful.. Like I wrote IMHO...but anyway thanks again! Just wanted to hear comments from people who really own either of the 2 guitars in question! It's a tough decision so yes I am kinda looking for a approval..to not waste like 3000€! Haven't fully decided yet..that's why I'm here obviously!

Someone said to get a strat if I'm onto SRV/blues stuff. Well I have one and I'm not so into blues, like I said I play in a progressive metal band and need a versatile axe. So strat is not it, neither is some "metal guitar", I'm looking something in between.
And so far the best options are Pet&sl1! Unfortunately they don't have the EBMM Pet bfr here at music stores so it's pretty hard to test one!

Btw silhouette is not for me. I tested it and the bridge didn't feel good to my hand. So it's back to those two...
