this guy is officially wierd

Q: Is there any coating that can be applied to protect the wood such as polyurethane, and how would this affect the sound? Supposedly Jaco Pastorious used boat epoxy on his fretless bass.

how come every one wants to be like jaco
just because u have ur bass set up liek him dosnt mean that you can play liek him
ppl liek that make me angry

Well, jub, consider the fact that many bassists out there get certain brands because so-and-so uses them. I myself and a few others on this board came to MM because of Flea. So having a setup like your favorite bassist is along the same lines of this idea. You're right, though - it won't make you sound like your fav. bassist. However, it would probably boost your mentality when playing your bass.

Well, Mr. Balzary no longer plays Musicmans, he plays his own Modulus signature model now with RHCP. So I guess that means all the Flea fans will buy Modulus basses...

...if only they can afford the damn things, heheh.

True. But I've found his slap on the Modulus in live shows to sound a bit... whimpy. It just doesn't have that kick that MM has. Of course, I may be speaking from bias, since MM has captured my soul. :p

I think someone else referred to the Modulus as the "plastic bass". I guess you could say it sounds like that to me, when compared to the MM.

Well, the point is that I came to MM because of Flea, but will stick with MM because I just love the sound. :p

I wouldn't say it's wimpy...I played at a jam session where some dude whipped out a (silver glitter) Modulus Flea 4. It's slap tone was DEFINITELY not wimpy, but for me the real MusicMan slap tone has far more soul in it. Some friends of mine play Modulus Quantum 5s, the tone is too sterile for me.

I started playing Musicman basses in 1978. I guess I can't credit Flea with getting me started.

It was actually my neighbor, Bill Hibbler, who was a guitar/bass horse trader. He brought it by and said, "I bet you'll like this" and asked me to pay him whenever I got around to it.

In that case, you can call yourself an OG MM bassist. Haha

Yes. "Sterile" was the word I was looking for. Plus, (here comes some MM favoritism... hehe) I don't like the looks of the Modulus'. They look like a spiked out StingRay with a horribly misplaced pickguard... But that's just my darn prejudiced self talkin'...

I like Modulus basses with the exception of the Flea bass. Hell, I'd probably like that one without the wimpy Bart pickup.

I am probably older than anyone thinks, even me, but my cute younger wife keeps me vital.

It's a truly butt-ugly pickguard. What were they thinking. The ugliness of the pickguard design alone is a turn-off. If I had one the first thing I'd do is whip out the screwdriver... :)

Jaco's Fretboard

With respect to the original posting, Jaco did indeed coat his fretless fretboard with several layers of yaught varnish. It reduces wear and tear on the fretboard and produces a harder sound also.

Do you remember that bass before it was the Flea bass? It was called the Sonichammer and it had a flame maple top, trans finish, gold hardware and NO pickguard. Much nicer looking.

and fact of the day...on all of the flea basses flea uses, non of them have bartolini pickups on them, their all equiped with lane poor pickups
