The best Flea basses were the first ones wearing Lane Poor pickups. I don't know why they changed it to bartolinis. They had more punch but clearly speaking, the tone of this bass when compared to a good ol' StingRay IS wimpy. And aesthetically it looks like a toy.

One thing I cannot stand also in flea's playing nowadays is the bloody pick he's using. For example, in "By the way" when the short bass solo comes and you wait for an intense slapping(well not so intense really after rick rubin got over!!) all you get is a lousy distorted pick tone. It's almost like being about to go to bed with THE chick and you suddenly find out that "she" is actually a "he"!!

I think music man might have some of the coolest looking basses, aside from Pear, dw, or OCDP. wrong instrument.

But Jubs sterling is just gorgous. And prettiful, and all that jazz. It sounds like a beautiful instrument of instrumental proportions also.

True. But I've found his slap on the Modulus in live shows to sound a bit... whimpy. It just doesn't have that kick that MM has. Of course, I may be speaking from bias, since MM has captured my soul. :p

I think someone else referred to the Modulus as the "plastic bass". I guess you could say it sounds like that to me, when compared to the MM.

Well, the point is that I came to MM because of Flea, but will stick with MM because I just love the sound. :p
I "feel ya"but Flea had a bigger picture in mind.Modulus was willing/and did "brake him off"some cha ching and I'm not sure that EB was willing to do the same so Flea is cha chinging all the way to the bank with a plastic sounding bass.

F---k it, Why Not !.

Flea wanted the Stingray to be changed to the Flea model or whatever. Why would the company do that, when the Stingray was a huge seller before Flea and continues to be after he went elsewhere.

Seriously? That's pretty funny.

What was the deal with the EVH thing?

In response to this thread's original topic, Jaco coated his fretboard with marine-grade epoxy. Petit's to be exact. It's still available and dries very hard. However, I would recommend "West Systems" Marine-grade expoxy. It's fairly high-tech stuff. Easy to work with and dries hard as steel.

Find it in boating supply stores, or I'm sure you can order it online somewhere.

I don't really care to much about flea, but I believe Lane Poor went out of business, which would definitely put a damper on pickup production.
