JP is using Mesa Boogie Amps....one is a Road King I believe and a Lonestar if I am not mistaken. I do know he uses Mesa's....just not 100% on which models.

On the Train of Thought tour he used 2 RoadKings and 2 Lonestars. (both set up in stereo) He used the RoadKing drive and the Lonestar clean. Makes me wonder, since the new Series II RoadKing has the Lonestar clean, will John make his setup smaller.

I've heard some talk about him using a Mark IV or II for the last few months, but I doubt it.

I thought he used one of the rectifier's? If I wanted the JP sound and were to sell my 5150 Combo, which Mesa should I buy?

it depends which JP sound do you prefer. His sound from the 6DOIT album through Train of Thought and Octavarium is basically Rectifiers (Dual Recto on the 6DOIT and the Road King on the ToT and Octavarium). If you want that more liquid sound and mid rangy (which I love) from the previous albums I'd suggest Mark IV series or Triaxis with Mesa poweramp,

Scenes from a memory was all Mark IIC+ which is not in production anymore. Mark IV would be the closest one to that. Suspended Animation was recorded with Road King and Mark IIC+. Mark was used for some leads I suppose. I think it is quite easy to hear the difference as the Mark IIC+ is more liquid and less compressed than Road King, the notes just sing.

Supposedly the Mark IIC+ is going to find its way back into the rig which--as has been discussed--has consisted of the Road King (which is a Dual Rectifier BTW) for dirty sounds ("vintage" channel for lead, "modern" for rhythm) and the Lonestar for clean.

I can't wait to see how he's going to do it.

JP rigs

Train of Thought and Octavarium: http://www.johnpetrucci.com/equipment.html

Six Degrees: http://www.johnpetrucci.com/equipment_6degrees.html

Older rigs: http://www.johnpetrucci.com/equipment1.html

I would love to emulate his G3 Live in Tokyo and latest clinic rig, which is basically a wah, a stereo digital delay pedal, and 2 Road King half stacks with the straight Recto Traditional Cabinets with Celestion Vintage 30s. That's what he had when he did the clinic at which my avatar picture was taken.

Open up that bank account Tim. I priced a Mk4 combo at our local store and it was £2700!!! I didn't even like it either! Sounded great with the Luke but couldn't get a decent Axis tone through it. Then tried the £1000 ENGL Screamer combo and it blew away the Mk4 to my ears!!! I need to try a few more guitars and effects through it but its certainly in the lead for a replacement to the AVT150. Though I may end up with the JCM2000 TSL combo as an alternative as it sounded great in a different way. Also tried a Rivera (can't remember which one) and the Axis sounded so much like early VH through it it was surreal, but on that one, I couldn't make the Luke sound remotely nice! The Boogie F100 also sounded good with eth Axis but I haven't had a chance to try the Luke. However, the Axis didn't sound very VH like. Boogie distortion sounds naturally compressed even without any effects and I prefer the sound to be looser and more open.

I've found mesa boogie amps are very picky with what pickups you use, l also wasted my money on a Mesa Booge Dual Rectifier head ($4600 AUS      I most of been crazy), my petrucci sound like crap through it, my wolfgang sound passable, if l play metal, the Luke probably sounds the best, but sounds very empty. I've since given up on it and now a mate of mine is using it.

I now recommend to anybody that asks me, don't worry about who plays these things, let your ears be the judge, and make sure it's the sound you want, cause it's one expensive mistake.

I had a dual recto ages ago (~$2000 AUD 2nd hand), and it was set up with EL34 power tubes - great sound, a bit loose and coming apart but sounded heaps better than how lifeless 6L6's seem to sound in those amps.

I also just found this link: http://www.eurotubes.com/euro-n.htm which mentions some more options for selecting and setting the mesa tube amps up (including the recto).

Anyway, don't give up on it just yet as the sound you're after could still be in the amp somewhere - looks like you payed enough $'s to deserve getting a great tone.

Yeah they cost a fortune, l bought mine brand new ($4600), since you've menitioned Eurotubes, Bob there seems to be a really helpful guy, and l love how JJ's sound, from my last amp that is. But l agree with Bob when he says the bias is set too cold, cause thats what l've found too. But l don't think l could afford buying tubes hoping it's gonna sound better, l have JJ 6l6's in the power amp atm, and l'm kinds broke atm, l put all my money into this amp, and l loaned some from a mate, and l'm still paying him back. I'll more than likely sell the Dual Rec and get a JSX, l put them side by side, and the JSX was more fuller, didn't sound so stale/empty, as a matter of fact it blew the Mesa out of the water, l'll give peavey this, they make great amps, but sh!t guitars, l also tried a Rivera Knucklehead a couple of months before l bought the mesa, but l passed on it, as l thought l loved the mesa, but l did love the sound of the Rivera, l also passed up a chance to get a Bonehead, which l've heard is a mean amp.

But you wouldn't to happen know how much these go for second hand here in Aus? (It's the 3 channel dual rec. l've had it since October last year, it's still brand new) l've had some offers, but they are just laughable, stupid kids. hehe.

I'm glad you like yours, l just don't dig it what so ever, and thanks for the suggestions too.

Scott.

poor bugger, thats a whole lot of cash to waste on a bad sounding amp, i must say, i've never understood the Mesa amps, they all sound like trash to me. really nasal metal type osund, horrible clean sounds. i guess i'm a Fender amp guy, but i love my Marshall Bluesbreaker combo. classic rock sound is me i guess.
