Hi guys,

A few weeks ago i almost got wacked (mob terminology ;) ) when i asked for measurements to build a JP6 replica...

Funny enough, the thread evolved to a very polite and civilized discussion about guitar building, and i ended up deciding that i wouldn't be doing a JP6 replica after all...

So, as some of you may remember I said that i would review my design and post some pics about it.

Well, here they are! Mind you that the headstock is stil MM, but thats gonna be my next step of the review.

So thanks to all of you, especially BP, for showing me the light! so to speak.

Anyway, the way you dealt with my first questions made rethink my project, and that's why i want to share all of this with you.

So, some specs:

Basswood, with exotic wood top (don't know yet, maybe cocobolo or somethig in that region)
Maple neck, bolt on with machine screws a la john suhr guitars (with threaded inserts in the neck)
String Thru body with Gotoh T-O-M bridge
Ebanon scale
Stainless steel frets
Schallers

And pickups, we'll see...

Any comments about my new project are more than welcome.

Cool, your using Catia, V5 R18?

How'd you get the headstock shape in?? Trace it and DXF??

I don't care about buying a X brand guitar...i'm doing this because i want to BUILD a guitar... If the purpose was just to have another guitar, well then yes i might just buy one...

It is indeed Catia V5R18.

Catia is basically a software similar to Solidworks, sold by the same company actually, but in MY OPINION, is much more advanced than Solidworks. It has a surface module in it, wich allows you to do all the crazy shapes that you wish. On top of that, you can program everything to use in a CNC wich is what i'm gonna do.

BTW, any suggestions regarding the specs, or the overall looks?

One other thing, the headstock, was basically just traced from a picture, and then scaled, and transfered to CATIA for 3D modelling

Thanks

Nice work!

THis is a great example of someone finding another outlet for their passion...Im sure after this ibby based one his next will be more personalized...think of it like playing in a caver band at first then moving on to originals.

If you're looking to build something, then what's the point of building something so generic? Push your creativity. Go wild. Use weird exotic woods. Unusual construction techniques. Challenge yourself as a builder. Ever thought of winding your own pickups?

Ever thought of making a carved top Axis? With a set neck or neck through? Play with headstock and neck tilt angles? Single Single Hum with 2 volumes and one tone? 5 Way switch? Phase switch? A vintage trem with a Hipshot extender tuner? So many options to try. Just knock yourself out!

Sweet man I use Pro-Engineer on a daily basis. I was using Catia for about 3 years, but that project is over. It's a cool and querky tool man, but I got use to it ad it's not that bad.

...........think of it like playing in a cover band at first then moving on to originals.

Great comparison.

By copying various parts of different guitars he's going to get the knack of the actual building process.
The next step will involve his own creativity and personalisations.

Nice effort fella, look forward to seeing the final product(s) :)

Hahahaha... Got it... Got it... I thought he had some experience building at least. Oh well. Starting from zero is the best I guess... Which way you intend to develop is entirely up to you.:D
