Cool! I'd like to know what makes him change his mind periodically...

I guess my new BFR will have 10's on it! I'll try them out again for a while. I've been digging the hybrids lately though. Maybe JP should try the hybrids!! It's the best of both worlds IMO...

Thanks for the info, BP...

Effective yesterday all JP guitars will come from the factory strung with Regular Slinky's (.010-.046) John has made the switch back to the heavier gauge.

I'd really really love to know as to why he switched back. I'm just curious what made him go down to 9s in the first place. I've been playing 10s for about 10 years now and just recently switched to 9s after buying my JP7. If it wasn't for the fact that it was shipped with 9s, I probably wouldn't have ever switched. But I think I'm sticking with 9s from now on. I just have so much more control with bending and vibrato.

Sterling, is there any difference in the nuts on the guitars strung with 9s versus the ones strung with 10s?

I've been using 9s forever on my 6 and 7. My OLP has 12s on it, for C tuning, and I gotta say, I prefer the resistance they give. But I don't feel like getting 2 set-ups for this, :p I've been wanting to change guages forever, but, eh, I'll just leave it for now.

I can't play 9s. If there was a suitable 9.5 gauge, maybe... but 9s have no resistance or feel in my opinion.

That said, thanks for the update BP!

Chris, I'm going to be helping you out with your pickup situation. Shoot me an email when you get the chance. As far as .0095s go, I believe it was BP that stated the tolerance on wire is .0005, which means that if you took calipers and checked what other companies call .0095 strings, they may vary as much as from .0090 on the thin side to .0100 on the thicker side.

I've been using .010s for years, they slow me down a bit and almost help control my playing.

Wow...what a product management nightmare that must be for EB. Having a manufacturing and product engineering background, I know how hard it is to control engineering changes, keep track of what has what, field issues, etc. I think it's amazing and cool of the EB folks to try and keep the models 'tuned' to whatever the artist is currently using....

I am curious why he wants the change too. I have 4 electric guitars, the EBMM JP and Ibanez have 9 to 42 and the PRS and Epiphone have 9 to 46

Basically I like a heavier gauge string on the 6th string to drop it to D on fixed bridge guitars, and then I use my regular 9 to 42 for the floating bridge guitars

I've been playing 9s since I started at the tender age of 11, the control I have for vibrato and bends is excellent with these string. My Epi came fixed with 10 to 46, I immediately had it set up with 9 to 46

again John, Why??? I'm just really curious, unless he knows he'll start playing more and more with alternate tunings and not the standard 440

Actually, hwe has different guitars set up with different gauges for different tunings. But I too am curious why he changed back to 9s on his main guitars.

Maybe he was playing too fast and the rest of the band couldn't catch up

Or maybe he just wants more sustain and tuning stability. I guess he has enough muscle power to do whatever vibrato he wants :p

I've always used 9s because my guitar came set up that way, but I'd consider a heavier low E strings when I run out of RPS9 sets, just for tuning stability when doing chords. I'm fine with the rest of the strings the way they are.
