So I am in the market for a new Music Man guitar. I currently have a Majesty Monarchy which I absolutely love! I am trying to make a decision between a JP16 and an Axis with Floyd Rose. I like them both but am having a hard time making up my mind. I know the Axis Floyd only dives while the JP16 Floyd can go up/down both and that does not really matter to me. I play mostly 80's Hair Band stuff and some Rush and a little Dream Theater (not up to Petrucci skills yet). Anyone played both or have any suggestions? No guitar stores near me that stock Music Man where I can try out both. Any and all comments/suggestions are welcome! Thanks!

I'd go with the JP15 personally. Is the price the primary factor that has lead you to those two particular choices? Or is it the Floyd bridge? I own both and overwhelmingly prefer the MM bridge to the floyd these days. Plus you get piezo and boost on the JP15. Just saying.

I've never tried an Axis but I've never cared for Floyds personally. I could never get used to the way they handle. I avoided the newest Non-Majesty JP model because of having that and also because the head stock is natural vs being black like the rest of the guitar (yeah I'm picky, I know). The MM trem is just plain awesome in comparison and changing strings takes minimal time and effort in comparison, you no doubt are aware.

But in an Axis vs JP debate I would take any JP just based on the features alone.

:) The Floyd Rose can be very useful if you need to switch from standard tuning to drop-D (with the addition of a d-tuna).

 The neck on an Axis is very comfortable.

 The Axis pickups are fantastic, no, legendary.

So, that being said, I recommend the Axis. Good luck with your decision.

Axis neck is fantastic, but very different from the JP necks. Axes can be tough to find in the wild these days, but I'd do my best to play both before I made a decision. Both are great, but they're two very different guitars. Why not one of each? :)

depends

You have to play both and see what feels best. Axis is one of the most comfortable necks I've ever played - its in fact amazing. Along with its widely loved pickups. It covers more ground then the JP imo. Axis also has a smaller body. The JPs have a bigger body over all.

Another thing to consider:
Feature set. The JPs have more bells and whistles then the Axis. The axis is great but it is a very simple guitar: 2 humbuckers, one knob thats it!

I have both (jp xi and axis w/floyd). Love both.

My first EBMM love was the EVH... but when I first tried one, I simply couldn't get used to the narrow neck. Now, I grew older and wiser, but if you are used to the wide and thin neck of the JP, the Axis will feel very different. If you want different that's absolutely great... however, if you want to switch seamlessly between the two in a live setting I would pick an additional JP.

Cheers
