In my neck of the world there is a fellow that actually comes to your house with his gear and does some tech work like set ups, fret leveling, pickup replacement etc at your home in a large work truck/van. He is very much into having the gtr owner watch him work and he will set up gtrs to your exact specs.

He also has a brick/mortar store where he does fret jobs, neck steaming, gtr building, etc but I thought the mobile gtr thing was a great concept.

Maybe you can find someone like that in your area.

Well I ended up taking it to my local music store. I agree that its the quickest way to get it setup properly and all, but I've always been a fan of the teach a man how to fish thing instead of giving him a fish.

I've got a yamaha RGX 220dz which I can practice on, but its got a floyd rose so its not entirely applicable to the jp6.

If you guys know of any free or nonfree but great ressource/book on the subject (setup up guitars). Please give me links!

On a personal note, why do guitar manufactors set up their instrument with such low action? Raise it to 3/32 and the instrument will resonate much better.

Hey all, I recently bought a fully loaded pearl redburst JP6. Although it is quite nice, I'm not completely satisfied with the action. I bought it in a store in Ontario by phone, so I didnt have a chance to play it before buying it. I suspect it had been in that store for a while, as the strings on it showed ware. I changed the strings a couple of days ago for ernie ball 10 gage slinkys. It sounds considerably better and is easier to play now but the action is an issue I think. Here are some pics of the action :

Is that angle in the tremolo normal??? If not, how can I fix it?

I read that the factory setting for this is 1/16th -> 1.5875 mm, which is pretty close to this, but still I would like a lower action

I tried lowering it a bit while I changed the strings by lowering the two bolts holding the tremolo but when I got it down to my desired height I got moderate buzzing.

Also I've been meaning to try adjusting the trust rod, but after inserting a tool in the wheel and trying to turn it in vain (tried pretty hard, dont wanna break anything), I'm wondering if its stuck, or needs more force or if I'm just not doing the right thing.

I've also though about bringing it to a local store and having it adjusted by a tech, but I've read horror stories about getting them back worse and having to pay for nothing and such so, I'm not too keen about that.

So basically, what would you guys do to fix that?

Thanks

Hey dude, you're almost there...

I'm guessing these things ship with 9's now. The 10's added a little tension that pulled your bridge forward.

A couple of trem claw screws will get it back to neutral. You might even need to bring the bridge up a hair.

Tighten your truss rod about 1/4 of a turn. This will take away some of the relief that was created by the added tension from the 10's and the bridge tweak.

At this point, it's going to be some small adjustments of truss rod and bridge height to get you where you're going as far as action is concerned.

Also, stretch them strings out! Sometimes 10's will loosen up a bit, and the adjustment from 9's to 10's won't be as dramatic once they're stretched out good.

When I got my JP a few years ago, they came standard with 10's, but I thought they were 9's, so on my next string change, I encountered the typical "new string gauge" syndrome, but it was a piece of cake to get it where I wanted it.

Almost too easy...
