Hey guys, I registered after searching around a bit and not being able to figure this out. This forum came up a lot while I was looking, so hopefully you guys won't mind me asking.
I've got one of the first-generation JP6 guitars (bought it around 2001 brand-new). It's been my absolute favorite guitar of all time ever since I got it. The first thing I ever changed about it was to replace the stock trem claw with a Tremol-No about three years ago. It was a pain to set up at first, but after a few days of fiddling I had it working perfectly and haven't had to touch it since then. Earlier I decided to bring my guitar back up to standard tuning (it had been set up for 1/2-step down for years), which meant I had to redo the setup on the trem. I looked at the videos on the Tremol-No YouTube channel to refresh my memory, and I figured it'd be a piece of cake, but it's been a nightmare. I've been messing with it all day and just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'll tell you what I did so far.
First, I locked the T-No and brought the tuning back up to standard. Unlocked the trem and and brought the bridge level again. Checked neck relief, it was a tad too high, so I brought it down just a touch (it's now about 0.010", measuring with a string height gauge from StewMac). My action had been a little wonky for a while, so I decided to go ahead and fix that too — now all the wound strings are about 4/64" above the 12th fret, the treble strings are 3/64". So far so good.
Then I go to fine tune the T-No to get the shaft perfectly aligned in the sleeve. Usually that just means tweaking a trem screw ever so slightly a few times. Well, try as I might, I can't get it aligned. As far as I can tell, everything else about the setup is near perfect. And I can get the thing very close to being aligned, but there is always just a touch of rubbing, and the bridge won't return to zero. I was making almost imperceptible tweaks to that claw screw, and it would get closer and closer, and then bam: worse.
I have the bridge parallel to the body, both of the trem posts in the front are as close to level as I can make them. The bridge sits just a few millimeters above flush (I had to do that to get the action right without bottoming out the saddle screws).
Is there anything else I can try? This is driving me crazy, and I can't even use the trem as it is now. This is my only guitar, so I'm pretty upset. Any help would be hugely appreciated.
