Damn it guys. I have a major problem.

I played a stupid JP6 at the local music store yesterday, and have no gotten myself into some trouble. I am as close as humanly possible to buying one. This is brutal though, because I'm left handed and will end up playing in Jimi-style.

How bad will this be for the floating trem of the JP6 to have the tension reversed? how bad will it be for the neck? I really like the tones of the JP6, and that was playing through a Soldano. I'm not a fan of Soldano.

I need all the professional opinion here I can get. I also need to try and snoop and find out if buying this is going to come back and bite me in the ass in a years time. Is there something left handed having been discussed with 24 frets, or has there been any talk of a lefty JP6? I am willing to spend 2000 dollars that I really don't have for this guitar because my want is now THIS bad; but I don't want to have to return it with a screwhole in the other horn and a wonky trem because of my left-handedness.

Any words of encouragement or discouragement?

I swear Mr. Petrucci was holding a lefty JP in the latest Guitar One magazine (the one with him and Paul Gilbert)...

Sorry, dude.. upon closer examination, it appears that someone reversed the entire photo on page 6 of the December 2006 issue. I hadn't noticed the fact that BOTH guitars that JP is holding are 'lefties'. I thought one was righty and one lefty. Now I see they're both lefty, which means the picture got flipped on the horizontal axis. Sorry again!

Edit: wow! Prog and Pete were fast on the draw and beat me to the punch!

You can certainly flip the Pet and it should work just fine. You'll have to have the nut reversed (and that means you'll probably have to have it replaced, depending on how easily it comes out).

This biggest problem you're going to have, as I know you are well aware, is the lack of upper fret clearance. It's going to be tight up there with it flipped.

But hardware-wise, I can't see why it would matter if you reversed the strings. A simple setup after flipping everything around should take care of it.

Good luck! I think it would look cool as hell to play a Pet flipped! ;)

Steve Morse is left-handed and plays the "normal" way (right-handed).
My daughter (7 years old) is left-handed. When she started playing classical guitar 2 years ago, I talked with her teacher. He agreed with me that it is better to learn like a right-handed person. In fact, your two hands will work, so it just a question of habit. My daughter never had a problem (but like a lot of left handed person, she is able to use her right hand for a lot of things).

For Jimmy, it is certainly too late for changing his habits ...:(
Perhaps a custom order is possible ??? Some brands have this option, and some give this option for free (I guess the CEO is left handed ;) ).

Good luck for your hunt

My hopes thwarted.

I went to work today, so jonesed about the idea of a left handed Petrucci, I was practically glowing. I kind of figured it was some sort of duping; but was excited nonetheless.

I am on the way to the music store in just a few minutes to take the JP6 out on loaner for a week. I have to try it and see if I can handle the horns restricting the access so much.

Wish me luck kids!

Good luck Jimi. Although, the nut problem. How easy would it be to flip a compensated nut?

And on those southpaws playing guitar the "normal" way round, I heard that Jimi Hendrix (I'm sure I read this some years ago in guitarist magazine) was in fact right handed. He apparantley played pool right handed but played guitar left handed. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
