I like that middle tone, but it seems to be a pretty drastic volume decrease when I select it. It that the case with everyone else? I like it a lot, but I wonder the usablility of it... I have even gone so far as to set up a boost in my chain so I can try to use it.

It's not really meant to be as high output as either humbucker. For clean passages it's great (same deal with the Axis Super Sport wiring) but it won't sound as good or as loud with a ton of gain.
If it's really a problem you can always wire it up to be both humbuckers in parallel rather than one coil of each in parallel, that will give you more output and a meatier sound (e.g. like the middle position on most dual 'bucker guitars).
