Anyone else running it "backwards" from the way JP does, i.e. the blade side towards the bridge as DiMarzio originally intended? How do you feel it differed tonewise from blade towards the neck? I've had my installed ala JP but the wire bundle is keeping me from being able to get the pickup to sit exactly where the stock one did height-wise. It sits a smidge higher and it's enough to be noticeably louder than the neck. I flipped the pickup around and it sat better in the cavity since the wire bundle was not jammed underneath the pickup and the two pickups were pretty balanced from a volume perspective. My tired ears however are initially telling me the D-Sonic installed in this manner is thinner sounding then it was backwards ala JP. Anyone else feel this way? A second try tomorrow after some sleep probably would be a better judge.

I only tried very briefly when I was installing mine, with 1 string, but it was definately thinner, with more bite. I much prefer the blade facing the neck.

Isn't the blade facing the bridge on the JP7?

You are correct, sir!

I've got one installed in my Ja**son that way, althogh it's not basswood, but alder (which is thinner, no?), and it sounds kickass in it for metal riffage and high gain soloing, quite similar to the old JP bridge pickup, only with a bit more "Oomph", esspecialy in dropped tunings, which is what i plan do to with it.

I definetely noticed it sounded thinner and I actually liked the sound of the blade facing the neck but no matter how I tried to run the wire under the pickup, I just can't get the pickup seated properly in the cavity, it will tighten down and seem like it's fully seated but it's not and it sticks up a litte higher than the stock bridge pickup did and also sits higher than it does with the blade towards bridge i.e. the wire exit is on the right side so there is no interference problems. This small height difference is making a noticeable volume imbalance between the bridge and the neck.

Measure the difference in height where the Stock pickup is supposed to sit to where the D sonic sits, if it's an 1/8th of an inch (example) you could shim the neck pick-up 1/8 " and it should help balance the volume better.

I have a couple of clips with my Petrucci 7-string and the blade facing the bridge. I have only had it for a couple of weeks and this was the first clip I did (excuse the playing). I don't feel I dialed in my tone with the pickup very well at the time. I have my amp dialed much better now and will post newer clips when I get a chance.

It is the Biaxident clip. The one marked (Final) was done with a "more wet" setting and the other one is a bit more dry.
