Hey Guys,
New to the forum, look forward to spending lots of time here in the future!

So I recently had my JP6 setup by my local guitar tech (happens to be Nuno Bettencourt's guitar tech!) and he also replaced the nut. He did a fantastic job but I would like to eventually be able to avoid paying every time I want a set up. I've looked around at some setup guides but a lot of them are very different from each other. Would you guys have any online guides (either forum posts, videos, blogs etc.) that would do a good job at teaching a beginner like myself the fundamentals for a guitar setup?

Also, my JP6 seems to be having a small problem with the new nut. When I play my open G, B and E strings (a little bit less significant on the E), they sound sort of 'muted', especially when playing clean tones. Normally, these strings should really ring out when being strummed or individually picked but it is not the case. I'm not sure what the cause of the problem is but I really do not want to have to go through getting a new nut again. Any ideas on what is wrong?

I'd really appreciate any help!

Hiya Jeff and welcome to the forum!

There might be some videos on the Ernie Ball YouTube site that could be useful but certainly you'll find set up tips over at Welcome to the Ernie Ball Music Man Company, look for the FAQ section (see the link in my signature, below). I'd also strongly recommend getting yourself one of the excellent books by Dan Erlewine and making a (small) investment in some basic tools (steel rule, a good set of screw drivers and Allen wrenches, feeler gauges). Setups are not rocket science and can even be very enjoyable!

If the tech gave you a new nut and there is a problem with it, IMO he should take care of that for you free of charge, especially if it's recently done.

Hi and welcome - I've posted quite a few threads on JP 6 set up.

... ... and I agree with DK - he may be Bettencourts tech but if he's cut you a "duff nut" he needs to sort it out.

Thanks for the reply guys!!

I'll definitely check those out to see the setup guides.

Took the JP6 to my tech tonight and he noticed it as soon as I showed him. Turns out the nut that EBMM sent me was slotted extremely poorly. My tech managed to get the E and B strings sounding good but the G string was a disaster right from the factory. If you look at it, it was slotted deeper than the D string. There was barely any room to do any additional slotting as it would get the string too close to the fretboard. He's sorting it all out now :)
