JP6 String Height Measurment

Hey All,

I have a first run JP6 in black and I seem to have a little issue I can't beat or figure out. I have taken this guitar to Pete up in CT, but now I live in Long Island and that might not be as easy.

First, I would like to know what tool to buy to measure string height off the frets to at least put the guitar at what factory standard is. I did send this guitar for a fret dress and set up about 2 years ago to Ernie Ball and I believe the action was fixed a little.

I can not seem to get the strings at a comfortable height without my D string having problems ringing out unfreted. To try and set the action on the other strings a little better the rest seem to be too high.

I would like to at least measure the height and work from there as I get better at setup and maybe eyeball it or work from feel as I get used to it. I am unsure what tool I could go buy to measure it to standard.

are you sure it's something wrong per se? i have a jp6 and i remember it rattled alot when i first go it (yeah, i know you got yours long enough) but was otherwise pristine set-up. all i took for me was a change in play style. remember it's a shred guitar. if it IS a problem then i suggest a new set of strings, check relief(curvature of the neck) followed by action.

if that doesn't help, your description depicts a D groove in the nut that's been cut too deep. something i would expect from a G or Low E string, not from a D. the solution is neither simple nor subtle: getting a new nut fitted. not something i would do on my own guitar.

Hey...I'd first check out the FAQ to make sure you understand the recommended procedure for setup. There are also multiple threads here that cover the same thing (my learning curve was in 2005 and the guys here were incredibly helpful).

Although I now simply adjust things the way I like them rather than by exact measurements, I do still measure things occasionally to check for consistency across strings, monitor changes due to humidity, etc. I use a simple depth gauge. It's a 6 inch stainless ruler that I got at Radio Shack for $1.99 that is flat on one end and marked down to 32nds of an inch. I just sit it on a fret and see where the string hits. Has worked fine since I got my first JP...

You can get a machinist's rule like these fairly cheap. It's good to document a starting point.

Did something change after I tweaked it for you?

I do virtually all of my setups by feel, and just use the rule to check that the radius stays the same. Keep plugging away at it, if you have any questions about procedure you've got my contact info
