Hey,
The other day i was cleaning everything on my Jp6 with the strings off and i pulled the trem out and noticed the two point's which the trem rests on (the knife edge's ) are Absolutely Shot!

The chrome is pealing away and you can see what looks like a copper colored metal under the pealed chrome and then a die cast material under that!!

Is this normal???

I had a similar thing with my JP about six months ago. I contacted customer service immediately by email with some photos attached and they were very quick to reply that after a good deal of trem usage that is completely normal, but if it caused any issues to the tuning stability or trem functionality (which it hasn't so far) I could send the guitar in and get it replaced.

I'd just shoot them an email with some photos and ask! They really are the best. ;)

i think its natural for the knife edges to develop some wear especially with heavy usage. as long as it doesn't affect the tuning stability you should be good to go.

I took mine off yesterday to clean underneath the bridge in the routing below it and was surprised at the wear on the knife edges. The surface plating wear is not a big deal, but the edge itself is looking pretty rough on the low E side. I've contacted Customer Service via email...

I discovered exactly the same phenomenon with my JP6 about 2 years ago and did a lot of research on this and other forums to find that it is perfectly normal.

As others have said, as long as there are no other issues, it is just a function of how the part wears over time.

If it stays in tune, who cares . .

+1

They look fine when fitted and stay in tune... What more could you ask for?
I've taken the bridge of my lukes before and while they looked uber thrashed, they hold tune perfectly!!!
It's not a big deal by any stretch of the imagination.

Haha you don't pull apart a motor a say "hmmm thing thing looks funny on it's own"
When it's all together it's greased lightning baby!!!

Wow I have seen some pics of those trems and think its unacceptable.
I have 25 year old guitars and the trems show hardly any wear at all. I have a JP7. Just got it. Hope mine doesn't go the same way.

If you have metal rubbing against metal, it's going to wear. It's compounded by the knife edge design, as the forces are concentrated into a smaller area.

It will wear and the chrome will crack. It's one of those things. When you have two metals together, the softer one will wear at a greater rate. If the trem was made of a harder material, then the wera would be on the posts, which would be much more of a problem.

The plating will go due to stress on the edge, nothing you can do about that one.

Take a real knife and place it on a block of harder metal. Then put 100lbs on the knife and watch what happens....

Is that trem plated??

I think as the whole trem is dipped when being plated they should cover the edge and leave it without plating. This way you wont get this horrible appearence.

None of my 3 JP guitars have as bad of wear as those pics. I can think of a few things:

1. You've been using the trem a LOT. Like abnormally.
2. You adjusted the trem height with the strings tuned to pitch which "dug in" to the knife edges.
3. You got a poorly plated trem. This happens from time to time.

I think any way you go Customer Service will help you out.

That is my bridge and pics I posted on the JP forums (obviously). I wanted to see if it was normal or not. Doesn't look normal IMO.

1. Nope! I am not a huge trem user - mostly for vibrato. No abnormal use whatsoever.
2. I did this a few times when I first got it to fine tune the setup - but after it was set I didn't touch it.
3. This seems to be the most logical answer. We'll see what Dan says!
