I just cleaned my JP7's neck. First, I used Murphy's oil soap diluted 3:1, dried it, applied Birchwood-Casey Tru-oil, wiped it off after 5 minutes, then applied Birchwood-Casey Gunstock wax, which were all recommended steps off the Ernie Ball site.

However, now my neck is stickier and is a darker shade of brown than before. I can live with the darker shade of brown (although I liked it lighter), but I really liked the smooth glide of the neck prior to cleaning it.

Anyone else have any experience with this? I'm guessing I put a bit too much on or left it on too long. If so, how should I get some of it off so it's smooth again? #0000 steel wool?

Also, I got a little of the oil on the body. How should I get this off without hurting the finish of the guitar?

Thanks.

Your method seems OK - did you buff the neck between steps? A little goes a long way with both the wax and oil so you may want to give it a good rub/buff before trying to strip it and starting again. But if you do, I don't think you would need to re-oil, just take down the wax (the 000 should work) and re apply a small amount and buff it up good.

I sent them an email, and they recommend lightly sanding the neck with 1200 grit sandpaper to take off the sticky stuff. They also said: "Then we would use paper towels to apply the gunstock oil and wax treatment. Make sure to remove the oil 5-7 minutes after applying. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions!"

I did follow the instructions directly from the FAQ section of the ernie ball site as well as from the bottles of the oil and wax, so this doesn't help much.

After applying the oil, I wiped off the excess with a towel. I then rubbed it some more, applied the wax, and rubbed it as well. I think I'm just going to use some 0000 steel wool on the neck until it's smooth. Sound good?

Just buff the wax off with a paper towel. Keep at it until it's smooth.

I tried that for about 5 minutes and it didn't do much, so that's why I thought I'd try the steel wool.

Also, any advice on how to get the oil off the body?

Maybe you used too much oil? A little goes a long way. I find the oil tacky, the wax not so much.

As far as getting the oil off the body. Use a dry paper towel to get as much off as possible. Then try a LITTLE household cleaner that has a grease cutter in it. I've used windex on my guitars with no ill results. Or you could try some guitar cleaners out there like the EB, Dunlop 65, etc...

I'll give the windex a shot. Thanks.

I just used some acetone for the body and steel wool for the neck and it turned out fine. Thanks for the help.
