Hello,

I am wondering how does the finished neck of JPXs feel.

I have been searching for people discussing about JPX and JP6,

and I found that many people prefer JP6 because of the oiled unfinished neck.

However, I think other than the neck, JPX seems to be better...

I just can't decide which one is better, and posting this thread to ask about the neck.

Thank you so much.

I like the finish on the neck of my JPX better than any unfinished neck I have played.

I guess the JPX's neck is not as bad as some people say...

I was just wondering because some people seemed like they were actually choosing JP6 over JPX just because of the neck...

The neck finishes on EBMM stuff is very nice. I have a Sub1 and played a JP BFR, both of which are very smooth. I'd assume the JPX is the same type of finish. However, I much prefer the feel of the unfinished neck of my JP, just more natural and smooth to me. Plus, the JPX doesn't necessarily sound better, just different. I prefer JP's tone prior to the BFRs, but he also changed amps around the same time.

I've owned 2 JP6's with unfinished necks and an axis with an unfinished neck. And honestly, sometimes when it gets really humid and sweat, the JPx neck feels smoother and easier to slide around on. Something about the finish EBMM uses doesn't gum up like other guitars.

These guys hit the nail on the head, I think the finished necks are super fast!

You won't find anyone on this board who was more skeptical about the JP6 BFR and JPX finished necks than me. After years of trying to play my LP and struggling with gummy stickiness every time I sweat, the JPX is a breath of fresh air. I LOVE the neck.

It is glossy - not satin finished like the Sub1. However, I have yet to feel it get sticky. If all my EBMMs could have this neck, I'd order them that way from here on out.

Well outside of tone, playability comfort would be the second most important factor in buying an ax in my book. I have never played a JPX so I could not comment on the feel of the finished neck but either way your best bet is to play both and go with what feels best to you. Personally a finished neck is fine with me, but if I could have a preference I would have an unfinished one. But a question like this on the forum is not going to give you an answer as you are going to get a mixed bag. Go checkout both and take home the one you click with.

Thank you for your replies and help.

I guess I just gotta check them out first...

I have visited two places, but non of them had JP6 or JPX...
(but I found JP7 in one of them, and BFR model in another, thats a good thing, to check out the necks...)

Anyways, thanks a lot!

For me, you cannot beat the original JP necks. All EBMM guitars are fantastic so you really can't lose. However, the JPX is my least favorite because I don't like the five way switch. Very tall in the middle position. The frets are not that much bigger and the ebony board is not a big deal to me. I still love the arm scoop on the original as well. These are small factors to be sure, and I can play equally well on any of them. My friend let me jam on his JPX over the long weekend to compare to my original JP...tonally not much difference with the same setup and player. Go with what you think feels best for YOU...but again, you will be proud to own any of them.

Thank you for your detailed reply.
It helped a lot.
About the arm scoop.., the JPX doesn't have one?
I thought the JPX and JP6 bodies have just a little size difference.

when I played a JPX a few weeks ago I couldn't get along with the neck at all. The finish was intrusive to my playing style which has a lot of slides and quick moves between positions. The oiled necks are much better for me in those cases.

I think the only thing you can really do is play both. I didn't agree with the JP neck at all when they first came out, my original impression was that it is way to thin for me. however, after playing one for a little bit while it wasn't to long until I found it quite comfortable. I am still and Axis guy because I love that neck shape, but my point is that you will adapt to whatever guitar you play if it plays nice enough and I have yet to find a MusicMan with a truly bad neck...

As for finish vs no finish and playing speed... I think JP could smoke all of us speed wise and the finished neck doesn't seem to be holding him back.
