Great playing and tone as always! I've got a question about recording... Seeing that you have a Road King cab, and you use a single SM57 mic (I'll start recording in a few weeks once my Focusrite 2i2 arrives, and will be using a single SM57), could you post a picture of your mic placement? Also, do you use the V30 or the Black Shadow to record? THanks a lot!

I use the SM57 placed 3-5cm to the right of the mesa logo on the cabinet (on the V30 next to the letter A to be clearer). I found it to be the best place for what I'm looking for. The Black Shadow sounds ok but has a "raspy/nasal" tone quality that makes mixing a little bit harder. I've tried other positions on the V30 but I couldn't spot a huge difference.

Also consider that there are "tricks" on mixing that can enhance your tone, to achieve that sound I had to add filters, EQ, double tracking, compressors, reverbs, etc... all small things that add to the final tone.

Thanks a lot for the tips! Do you place the mic perpendicular to the cloth of the cab or is it off axis? Yeah, I assumed the rhythm tracks were double tracked and the leads single tracked. The thing is, I want to (at least for the rhythm tracks) be able to leave the recording untouched besides adding some compression and a low pass filter to cut out any harshness/noise from the recording, hence my questions...

The mic is perpendicular to the cab. The leads were also double-tracked to add more punch and body to the sound. The compression helps to avoid volume peaks (especially when palm-muting or when playing clean the chords usually sound louder). I don't have a formula, for every song I always discover some new technique, just keep experimenting.

Yeah, that's the main purpose I want to use compression for in post processing, to even out the levels on both the clean and distorted tracks. You double tracked the leads? Is it the first time you do this or do you always double track leads? The leads in Learning to Live and Pull Me Under didn't sound like they were double tracked, yet they had quite a lot of body...
P.S. I don't know why I keep writing in english... Tocás de puta madre! Tengo pensado grabar covers de Surrounded y Limelight, además de temas propios. Cuando los tenga, los subo. (Back to english for forum's rules' sake I guess)

I double-tracked the main solo on Pull Me Under, the short solos before the choruses were single-tracked. In Learning to Live and Surrounded the solos were single-tracked. I usually single track the solos but the last few times I decided to make like 6 different takes and choose the two that would sound almost the same, where are you from?

Hi vicsnake, as I was re-reading this thread I wondered, what DAW do you use? Do you use only one DAW for recording, editing and mixing, or do you use different ones for each thing? Thanks a lot!

I use Logic Pro 9 for recording and mixing. The video was edited on iMovie (the video is just a playback, it's not a live recording).

Great, v30 adds a lil more color, I use the celestion seventy 80 because its more transparent and don't color tone

but you sound great ,and its 45" angle downwards at the middle of the celestion about an inch away as you says, (where ya ? mexico?)
