Just finished cleaning my pair...(New Pics)

of Balls: The Axis and the Luke. Gave them both the royal treatment w/ lemon juice, tru-oil and gun wax (not on the Luke's rosewood fretboard) and my wife wants to know if there will ever be a time that I caress and rub oil on her the same way. I turned around and said, "Did you say something dear? Can't you see I'm having a private moment"? Ha Ha Ha

I will be getting some wonder wipes to try in the near future but I already had all this stuff anyway.

I took a couple of photos but I'm disappointed with the one showing the body
- it looks black in the picture and it really is a beautiful Black Cherry Burst.

Good camera + bad lighting = not brilliant pictures.
I thought I post them anyway.

I gave the guitar "the full works".
I used some steel wool, some wet and dry abrasive paper on the neck before applying the oils.
- lemon oil on the fretboard and gunstock on the neck.
I didn't want any shards of wool sticking to the p/ups like a "beard", so I taped them up. I also taped around the neck pocket and by the nut so that I wouldn't get any Gunstock oil on the body - as it will leave a residue when it goes hard.
Also as I have Albert Lee's sig near the top reverse of the headstock, I didn't want to go near it with any oil. It's just all down to preparation really before doing the job - just like decorating a room - you get better results with the more prep you do.

And as I say to my class - "Good question - just throw them at me!!"

Spud, why didn't you gun stock oil/wax the maple fretboard, rather than just using lemon oil? It lasts a whole lot longer.

i cant speak for Spud, but i prefer the lemon oil better because it doesnt give the wood that "tanned" look like the gunstock oil can....and i think the lemon oil brings out the grain and the birdseye better

I'll post some pics today but my camera can't seem to capture what I'm seeing.

Good advice getting the wife to help. Got to deliver that line carefully or at least stay out of slapping distance!

man i want one of those Al's it looks so damn smooth
nice work.
Q. how do you use steel wool on the frets ?

I, personally, just use a small piece of 0000 wool and buff the frets in one direction, not bearing down too hard so as not to remove too much material. I'm just looking to remove tiny burrs and any gunk that's accumulated.

I just used the wonder wipes fretboard cleaner on my EVH. Got rid of all the muck, and shined the frets up good and proper! Did the Red Axis and my ASS last week too. Could not believe the rubbish that was on those necks! The Wonder Wipes worked a treat!
