As I type this, I'm on my Sidekick driving back to Memphis from seeing MxPx perform at the Pagaent. Mike was of course using his Stingrays. He seemed to have a whole new set, though. No sparkles. He rotated between 3: a white one, green metalflake one, and the seafoam greenish one Scott showed us a couple of months ago. all with maple boards, matching headstocks, and the signature MxPx pickguuard. The white Stingray really made me want to cream myself. So gorgeous. Sadly, the seafoam green Stingray was only used for the bass toss, and I noticed it had a giant chunk taken out of the front contour.

They were on top of their game. They even played "Teenage Politics" after my friends and I screamed crazily for them to play it. They played a set of mostly old songs, which was very pleasing. Yuri was MIA, apparently he got stuck up in the Gateway Arch. They of course finished with "Punk Rawk Show." Excellent show. After 15 years, these guys still got it.

And one special surprise to note: Tom, for the majority of the set, relied on his usual Gibson Les Paul except for one song. They played a new song off their new album called "Contention," for which Tom pulled out an Envy Green MusicMan Silhouette. That really made my night, seeing both Mike and Tom repping EBMM. I hope to see Tom using his Silo more often in the future.

I am a fan of MxPx. I remember hearing Chick Magnet the first time and falling in love with that StingRay tone.

I count Mike Herrera as one of my first bass teachers. I'd listen and play along to most all of their songs. I'm not into them as much anymore, but I still rock the StingRay, so I guess he was more of an influence than I thought!
