I have had a very similar effect and colour by brushing on a potassium permanganate in a water solution as a wood stain to bare wood.Gives it that lovely brown roasted effect.I know that it looks purple in water but applied to wood it goes a lovely brown and over quilt, tiger stripe or any other 3 D wood effect,it realy enhances the wood as the thirsty parts of the grain absorb more colour.Obviously wear gloves as it will stain bare skin and test a small piece first. This has been used for hundrereds of years as a wood stain.
