I've been thinking of putting some Les Paul 57 Classic pickups in my hardtail Albert Lee HH instead of selling it altogether. Am I crazy to do so? Guess I'm just looking for some more straight bucker rock flavor. Thoughts?
If you like the guitar body, fit, finish and comfort, but not the tone, pickups are the way to go. If you bought the guitar new, you'll most likely lose more on the sale than you'd spend on the pickups.
Simply asking this question leads me to guess it's not just the tone, though.
Thanks for the responses. I did buy it new and really love the neck. Just haven't been into the tone, I guess. I've got my single pickup qualities from my American Deluxe Telecaster and my Gretsch White Falcon, not to mention a Jazzmaster and my Silhouette Special. Being as it's my only humbucker guitar, I guess I'm just looking for it to be in its own class. You know?
I personally think my AL HH sounds way better than any Les Paul I've owned or played...BUT it's my very own opinion. You might just LOVE yours with Gibson pickups!
I'd give it a try too. One thing to keep in mind is that the Al is built way different than a Les Paul. I've tried to get my Al SSS to sound like my strat, but haven't been able to. I changed the pickups my Al HH with TV Jones pickups just to have a different sound in my collection since I already have a pretty good Les Paul copy.
Not crazy. I have thought about doing a pickup swap in my HHAL to give my collection some different sounds as well. Was thinking of a HB size P90. Was also thinking of swapping pickups in my Green Axis... these mods are all reversible so why not try it?
