To my fellow LIII owners.

Is it common for the E string to be so close to the edge of the neck?

I can easily bend up, but if I bend down in the least the string goes off the neck.

I just want to know if this is the way they're made or does mine need an adjustment?

I'll post a pic in a minute.

Hey Bryan,

You are talking about the high E string right? Typically you would never bend down on the high E string (I don't know anyone who does that), but I know what you mean, sometimes the string may be found slipping off easily below the frets. Is this happening specifically towards the higher frets?

I would contact EBMM CS as the first step, some great folks out there to help you out :)

This is a bolt on neck right? Hard to make out from the pics, but it could be possible that the neck may have shifted a little bit in place where it's bolted, causing string alignment to change a little bit. It's a common thing and nothing to worry about, it can happen. But I could be wrong, and I will let others also chime in.

If that is the issue, DrKev here on the forums has done an awesome DIY video of how you can fix it. Check this thread for a link:

I would take it to a good luthier in case you are concerned about doing things by yourself!

Hope this helps.

Yes it's the high E.

And I know bending down isn't common. I was just wondering if this closeness to the edge is an issue that needs fixing or if it is a part of the LIII design.

Thanks for the help. If it is an adjustment, I'll know where to start.

Looking at the neck - does the high E string and the low E string appear to have a similar/equal distance to the edge of the fingerboard? If the don't and the low E string has a larger distance, than a simple neck alignment adjustment may be needed.

In my experience most ebmm guitars have pretty close tollerances for space between e string and edge of the neck. As said before the high e should nver be bent down as you will pull it off the edge of anny guitar. However if it slips off with normal playing then you might want to check if the neck is straight into the neck pocket. If it is slightly shifted downwards, the high e will get even closer to the edge... if this is the case try this: loosen up the neck bolts slightly so the neck can move freely in the neck pocket. Then holding your guitar in playing possition, pull the neck up a bit and tighten the neck plate again while keep pulling up to reposition the neck.

The thing is, from just regular playing it does feel very close to slipping off. Just regular vibrato takes is dangerously close to slipping off. I will bring it back to the store and have them take a look at it. Perhaps a simple neck adjustment is all it needs.

My Luke 3 is about the same as in your pics. It's pretty darn close to the edge. But it appears like that's just the way they are?

See that's what I was thinking. You could make the case for the neck needing to be moved, but the low E is pretty close to the edge too.

I'll see what more LIII owners say before I decide.

If you feel the low e is also close than the neck is propably good and straight so i'm afraid that you will have to learn and live with it.... its just the way musicman guitars are made i guess. One thing that is done by hand and can be different for individual guitars is the angle they file on the edge of the frets. If the angle they put on it is too sharp or they took too much fret edge away, it would leave less room for your strings to be played on

What i am talking about could only varry slightly so this is propably not the problem.... but you could have the store take a look at it.

Well now that I've spent some more time with the guitar, I've come to the conclusion that this is just the way the guitar is designed.

All I have to do is slightly adjust the way I approach playing it and after a while it became second nature.

Thanks to all of you for the advice and opinions. I think everything will be just fine.
