Locking nut low E string

I’m having trouble with the locking nut on my EBMM Axis. The one over the lowest strings will not bite into the threads because of the thickness of the low E. .042. Replaced the originals with Ti. Still happening. Bought something a little longer but don’t know if I should just drill out or look at a washer up there.

I've had a case where the hex screw from the back was too long and was pushing against the string clamp, actually raising it. I trimmed it with a dremel and all was fixed. I would have used a shorter screw but I was adventurous.
