When did the headstock MM logo change on Stingrays, i.e. when was the MM dropped ?

Reason for asking it that I have an orange / yellow Stingray purchased in early 89 (26594 serial no.) with the old logo (Ernie Ball marked above) but at the time I bought it there was other Stingrays in the same shop with the current logo.

Thanks

Hi kenito,

Not too sure what you mean...the word "Music Man" has always been there...as far as I know. Are you talking about the older Pre-EB style Logo (gold lettering outlined in black) with Ernie Ball pasted above that???

Did you buy the Bass as a new instrument or second hand?

Have you got a full description of the bass?

Cheers. :)

Hi Rod,

Yes I mean the older style logo with Ernie Ball marked above (picture attached).

I bought the bass new but it had been in the shop for some time.

Description-wise, its an orange / yellow burst, 3 band eq, 4 bolt neck, clear scratchplate, maple fingerboard. I can add a photo if you need one.

Cheers, K

Whooa .....Nice Axe!

The finish looks like a two tone burst...perhaps tabacco, autumn or orange burst...the pic is still a little dark on my screen.

From a sample of my serials, it's most likely a 1988 Bass which ties in with the date you bought it.....

25503...June 1987.
25509...06/87. White with Rosewood. Black pg.
267xx...Neck Date 14 Sep 1988. Natural one-piece body with Rosewood. Truss nut at headstock. 2 Band EQ. 4 Bolt neck plate. Top Loaded and Muted Bridge.
28404...24 Apl 1989. Orange Burst with Maple. Clear pg. 3 Band EQ.
29948...Purchased Sept 1990 but advised sitting for 9 or so months. Black with Rosewood. Black pg. 3 Band EQ. Muted bridge.

In relation to the transitional logo, I had assumed (only) that they had dissappeared earlier...but obviously not. Yours is probably one of the last...seeing that other new Basses in the store had the newer Logo. Sooooo....Trans Logos!....circa 1985 to 1988.

If you get the chance to get the Bass near some more light, I wouldn't mind getting another pic of your Logo and perhaps one of the whole bass so I can work out that colour. :D

P.S. Forgot to ask....is it a slab or contoured body???

Hey Masamax.....

Tricky little devils
put it on the back with the serial number ;)

I noticed that when I tried one out :) But still, I am not sure what logo I like better, the one with EB or the one without. Frankly, I really liked the original one.

I totally dig the one that's on the current Ernie Ball instruments; especially the StingRay and Sterling (don't know much about MusicMan guitars). The SUB and BONGO are ok too, but I prefer the other one... In fact, if I'd ever end up buying a pre-EB StingRay or one with the first EB logo, I'd really regret not having that logo on the bass ! I know, I'm weird :D
