Long scale bass strings on short scale bass?

Hi, a friend is after new strings for his Hofner violin bass, which is short scale.

Can he use regular long scale bass strings or should he get specially-branded short scale strings? If long scale strings are OK, what is the advantage of buying short scale?

id recommend using short scale strings. if you use long scale he will have to cut the string and the string wont get tapered/thinner at the end. like its said in another post here on the board, the hofner has little space in the tuners, so cutted long scale strings might not fit in there..
