I just bought a Boss RC-20 XL Loop Station pedal - what a great toy! It's brill for practicing, playing about with and generally time-wasting... but do any of you guys use them on stage?

I play in a 60's band and like the idea of using it occasionally for continuing repetitive riffs while I play a lead break over them - for example Last Time by The Stones. If this do-able in a live context - any tips?

not sure about the Boss looper but I've just purchased the Digitech Jamman and it can store loops to be used in the way you are asking. It's likely that yours will be able to do the same

They are both very similar in what they do, there are some slight differences, the JamMan can be connected via USB to a pc to store your loops and upload others, it also has an SD memory card slot (max capacity 2GB for up to 6.5 hours of storage) The Boss RC20XL has no card slot and no USB connectivity and can store 11 loops of 16 minutes max, which is enough really, but it also contains a feature that the JamMan hasn't and that is the quantize option, which means that if your timing is.... lousy, it'll fix it for you in sync with the click/metronome when you record with it that is.

Both are very good to be honest, but I like the extra features of the JamMan a little better.

Looping with band

I'm a solo acoustic artist. I have used a Boss Loop Station live for years...I really like it! I think I am going to look into the Jamman though because of the USB connection....

Using loops with the band, I tried that and unless your drummer can hear the loop well and play perfectly it is almost impossible...The loop does not give at all. I played with a professional drummer, not just some snot nosed kid and it didn't work well.
that's what I have found.

Thanks,
Jason

I bought the same looper a little while ago and have used it live - mainly in a solo spot.

I've used it to great effect on the Stealer by Free and Chasing Cars by Snow patrol.

I'm about to experiment using it for the sound of the jet engine intro/outro for the Beatles get back. Next I'm going to try filling in a "blank" spot in our cover of The Who - Won't get fooled again. I play the synth part on guitar but there is a part of the song where I'm playing another guitar part and I need the "synth" there as a backing for a couple of bars - I think the Looper will do it for me. Battery life seems real good - they haven't run out on me yet - but I also have the power pack.

So live - yeah it works fine but you need to be confident to use it live.

It's great to noodle around with at home and I've added layer over layer over layer to produce a nice track.

It's also good (I haven't used it for this yrt) to record a track from a CD and it will strip out the guitar sound.

Grand Wazoo mentions the other make and it has extra facilities that look reak interesting - I just wanted to get something <£200.

I use the Electro Harmonix Stereo Memory Man with Hazaraï.
It's a great delay and there is a also a simplistic looper, but it works great. For "on the fly" loops, it's great because it's easy to use.
For live playing with a band, I agree with Jason : if the drummer does not hear well the loop, train wreck will arrive ...
