My brother and I were talking about basses yesterday (he's thinking about getting another bass at the end of the year), and he said something about "used Bongo." Since I am not a bassist (and I do not own a Bongo :D ) I need to enlist your powers of persuasion. Why should he buy a Bongo? He's a 4-string player, although he might be convinced into a 5, since he doesn't yet own one.

I'm not lord bongo... but maybe... nah... heck i'll give you my thoughts anyways.

Because it is the most versatile and powerful production bass ever. They look really cool. Other than that it's about feel... but really, he'll find atleast a fewsounds he likes out of the bongo.

As I've been saying elsewhere in this forum, after my Bongo-4 HSC, I'm spoiled for other basses now.

In fact, I have a one week old Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass that's in danger of getting more closet time than gig time; although I'm sure I'll get enough use out of it to justify keeping it.

Tell your brother to spend a bit of time with a Bongo... 4 or 5 string - doesn't matter - it's a Bongo...

Visit one at a local shop - hold it, play it... Go back for more...

Regardless of what is said here, I truly believe that this is one argument made best by a Bongo...

And the Bongo can be VERY persuasive... :D

How true. While I never vociferously railed against its 'questionable' body style, I certainly had less than zero intention of buying a Bongo. I did not need another bass [and already had a Sabre and SR4FL in the stable], but the first Bongo I ever touched went home with me on the same day.

OK, it had a ridiculous clearance price on it that initially got my attention [as well as the bright orange finish] but even as a crazy bargain it was still a serious $$ outlay for an ax I didn't need, but suddenly absolutely had to have. 'Suddenly' means shortly after plugging it in. You play it once, you need to keep it.

Joe Nerve said, "I used to play basses. Now I play Bongos."

There is something very basically different about Bongos, aside from the visual aspect.

Is it playability? Yep, at least partly. The neck, that interesting cross between a Sterling and a Stingray, is just 100% right.

Ergonomics? They do sit just right.

Looks? Well, that's personal, but no one ignores them.

Tone? Ahem. YES. Who said the Bongo spoiled them for other basses? I completely agree with that, and I have tried to play my other basses, but then - why?

They may not be for everyone, but I can't figure out why not.

This is about the best sales pitch (and personal endorsement) that I've read about the Bongo so far...you've nailed it!

In particular, though, is the description of the neck...dead-on.

From the moment I saw a Bongo for the first time, I knew it was the bass for me. And that was looks alone.
Then you have the fabulous neck, the super flexible eq, the awsome pickups, the feel...
I agree with Joe; I also now play Bongo.

And get to call myself a Bongoloid too :D

We're going to Make 'N Music during our Chicago expedition this week, and they have one-he'll probably try it out then (AND I may finally get a chance to play a MM guitar!)

I'll report back soon.

How do you think they got me? I was rabid for a Sterling until (ironically) I tried BP's bass at the Open House!

One track mind, that guy!

Oh my, no. If you'd ever had a conversation with him, you'd know how hard it is to just keep up.

But I do rather like this concept. Azzy, are you in?

I'll pose if you will. We already know Chuck is game.

(unfortunately)

And then you lot wonder why women don't last very long on this place... ;)

Jack, I'm not sure - plus I don't have a Bongo I could pose with in the first place... perhaps if someone could lend me one... :D

I'll have to have a while to think about it (and lose some weight!)
